Is this brown rice jar colonizing correcly?
    #25511395 -

I inoculate this jar of whole grain rice 10 days ago. It may be hard to see but there is a bunch of mycilium formnig mainly on top is the most. Anyways does it look okay? I got a polyfil hole on top for gas exchange. I cant shake the jar now that mycelium is in it. It is all stuck together now. Anyways for 10 days does this grain look okay? Pics:

I don't think that's gonna work man. Those grains are so smeary and soaked inside. I htink you're just days away from it looking horribly bacterial. I don't see many people use whole rice well. Looks like white rice to. Usually you want brown rice, more nutritious.

Why don't you use a real grain like oats, rye or wbs?

It said whole brown rice on the bag. I cooked as it said on bag. Damn man. Looks like a possible failure. I got wbs though. You think this could have a fighting chance to fully colonize?

Pardon, I missed you stating it was brown rice. I went on looks.

I don't think you're gonna get anything from them. I would just start over with the WBS. Make sure you follow a tek and dry them well before jaring and pc'ing

Rough looking, dude, the mold makes sense. The grains should not be cooked through. Rinse them, then boil them until you start to see some burst kernels and take em off and let them steam dry in a colander or spread out over some kind of screen like a window screen. Cooking them all the way through turns that jar into Contamiland, population: no one who wants to grow mushrooms. You want >90% of the hulls of the grain to be intact with the outsides dry, trusting that the insides are at the right moisture content. When the kernels fully cook and the hulls are too soft and shit, starch is released inviting contamination and making those grains sticky af which is no bueno. Check out Bodhisatta's links, he's a savage and has everything you'll need to grow properly. I use rye berries, but wild bird seed, whole oats, millet, sorghum etc are all great to use.

With grains u gotta cook al dente cause the PC will finishing the cooking process. With rice, its even less time since rice is so small/easy to cook.

So what went wrong was probably that he overcooked the rice before the sterilization, right? I'm a noob looking to start my first grow and I was planning on using whole brown rice as spawn, I should just watch out of not to cook it too much and dry it well before jaring?

I'm really excited about getting into this hobby, and I just wanted to say thanks! You guys are awesomely helpful for new growers!

Overcooked it and didnt steam-dissapate (steam-dry) which is when u dry out the grains after boiling to help dry the outside of the grain. Gives it proper moisture.

Why dont you use the brown rice to make brf cakes? Very easy and forgiving, just grind it up to flour mix with verm and water. Dont need to pc either just steam, but PC is far better.

Ok, say you don't f that part up and inoculation and colonization goes well, whole brown rice works fine spawning to bulk as any other grain? And you don't need a PC to sterilize it and can do it with steam in a pot with a tight lid, is that correct?

I wanted to do without the verm if I can as my jars arent wide mouthed, and I read it's a pain in the ass to get them out if you use verm and aren't using the right jars, plus my reasoning is that if the jars are 100% brown rice, fully colonized thats 100% myc opossed to 50/50 myc verm, when I spawn to coir I'll need less jars, dunno if it makes sense or is worth it haha

Its Brown rice flour what you need.. or go straight to Rye, but then you def. need a PC.
