Brown Rice

I have been using PF style jars with brown rice I chopped into a powder in a blender. Has anyone else found this to be better/worse than the premade powder kind? It is basically as much a powder as it can get when I am done with it. The reason I ask is because it seems my jars are taking a long time, more than average from what I read.

don't waste your time or efforts on grinding the shit yourself. that takes all the fun out of the hobby. go to any healt food store or specialty store. If that fails you can order online from numerous places. Keep this part simple so you can worry about the hard/fun stuff.

Hmmm thats very strange... I took some brown rice from the store... used a coffee blender to ground them up into the smallest granule we could make... it wasnt powder, but it was thinner than sand...
with my jars being almost completely colonized at 15 days with PF classic, it seemed to do fine

Well I agree with leaving it whole. I`ve tried, whole rice with verm, brf with verm, and then just whole rice. My fastest jar was straight whole brown rice. And I cased both and I`ve noticed better colonization and fruiting speeds on the straight brown rice jars. Maybe just works better for me, there`s more info regarding brf/verm so it must be for a reason I guess??
I find with the brf and verm the water content sometimes rises as the jar colonises and it starts to become goey sometimes. If you precook you rice and put it in the jar loosely you have a perfect amount of air to rice ratio, spore fluid disperses nicely and quickly.
Use it don`t use it.

I grind that shiznit like half-way. I got some powder in there..but also some half pieces of rice. I think it colonizes faster cause of more space in the jars, or gaps. Just like you're not supposed to pack the substrate into the jars because there's not as much room for the mycelium to speed through. Itll eventually eat its way through, but with pockets of air it'll reach the bottom quicker.

On 7/2 i innoculated some spores into PF style jars, and i just used the BRF from my grocery store(preground), and the mycelium is ripping through it like nothing

I agree with Darrayld, the whole grain rice colonizes fast. Ive used wgr in saran microwave containers, in a quart container I go with about 1/3 cup wgr, cover with water to about 1/8" over the rice, double wrap the container with saran wrap, microwave for 5-8 minutes, allow to cool for a couple hours, wipe the top layer of saran wrap with alcohol and innoculate through the top, cover the hole with tape, and wait. This is a very easy way to do it, eliminates jars and the PC. I've had very good success rates doing it like this, dont bother trying it if you dont double wrap the container with saran wrap, these containers arent that airtight and will pull in contams when cooling down every single time.

I made up my first batch of whole rice jars on 7/1 using "Brown Pastures" tek.....they are 90% done on the 8th:). Fastest tek I've used.
