Let's explore NDEs
    #24928794 -

Now you may think this belongs in the Spirituality forum but I want to look at this from all angles and with a critical/skeptical eye and hopefully with an open mind. Can't do that well in that forum IMO.

Here's a typical NDE below. Let's see what we can conclude from it.

Hopefully good questions will come up from all you deep thinkers, skeptics and believers.  Lets see if we can figure out what an NDE is all about.

Here's one question to start it off. The skeptics say that the NDE is likely our brains way of making the transition from life to death less stressful for the individual. If that's true then why do some people have unpleasant or hellish experiences during an NDE?

This NDE experience has a Q&A right after it so you can get more info on the experience.

I have put forward the thesis that all of the NDE's occur during the moments emerging from blackout - hypoxia (like Nitrous Oxide) induced psychedelia which you can get after heart stopping, and experience on the way back in.

The set and setting of it is certainly NEAR DEATH, but the experience is on this (returned) side of the gap - it is not an experience that occurs in the gap or before the gap, although the mind may make it seem seamless.

Even if it seems to last hours, it is a very short time during recovery during which the whole experience crystallizes.

Yeah that's the most common skeptic explanation.

What about people who repeat things said or done in ER that happen in the middle of the procedure when the brain is fully offline?  Doctors and nurses claim this stuff happens from what I've read.

Also considering how different peoples psychedelic experiences can be why such a similarity in themes. Especially things like a life review?

Why would this even be happening in the brain? They are not like dreams proper.

What are the boundaries of the soul?

first, if we can accept that extrasensory and mystical experiences occur without subscribing to all of the beliefs associated with them....

many different experiences lead people to affirm postmortem existence.  OOB experiences can happen during childbirth, high fever, extreme pain, sports competition, etc.

to be a particular person requires distinctive features, contours, and boundaries.  Hyper-dimensional?

if we can learn to sleep consciously and develop a conscious witness and hold conscious awareness during strenuous rituals may be awareness can be retained in occasions where we normally loose it, and we may be better prepared for postmortem life.

Does the afterlife involve more than just awareness?

Nothing you're saying here imo is evidence that anything is happening outside of brain function in a material world. No soul or afterlife needed.

I was just reading about an Artificial Intelligence platform that predicts with 90% accuracy the timeline of a patients death (sample size of 160,000 patients). The article didn't mention how effective a human doctor is at the same task, but they did mention that the AI was much better at it and that it should make a substantial difference in getting patients into palliative care at a proper time.

They cited human bias and emotional investment as one possible reason for the large disparity.

I've only talked to a couple personal friends who have had NDE's. One was in a coma for a month, the other bled out on the way to an ambulance and was defibrillated back. But they both concluded there is nothing else to it. It was here one second and gone the next. No review, no white light. Nothing but drifting away and then next memory is snapping back to the world.

So with my limited comparison, I'd say that it's possible the similarity of readily available accounts may be the results of omission, confirmation bias, or simply our tendency to see patterns in what is around us unwittingly.

I'd be interested to see how many patients who have been "brought back" did not experience anything profound and to compare that to the number who did experience something profound. It may be the case that nothing profound at all is truly the common theme.

Great point and it was one I wanted brought up. Why do some have no experience when they go under and are supposedly "dead"? The only thing that I can think of is it might be the same reason you remember so few dreams or most remember so few.

well, i don't think that the brain has anything to do with it.

if we put half of your brain into a body blank which half would be you?

one of the most extreme OOB experiences I had was during an athletic competition where i set a new female record on the course, my brain was nowhere to be found during this whole process. it would be interesting to see what type of brain wave patterns would register on an EEG, as i'm sure there was nobody home!  in fact, i have no memory of the event, all of a sudden i was just at the finish line, 'i' didn't even experience the race.

Maybe another question to ask  participants in this thread is. "Would it make any difference to  you if either non existence or an afterlife was the reality"

Bias tends to infect discussions like this. Personally in many ways non existence would be preferable to me depending on what continued existence would be like and if someone could explain why people who don't want to be in a meat body that suffers decays and dies have to do it. Most explanations of what an afterlife would be just piss me off and make me want to ring the neck of any so called superior creative force.

So let's assume it is a metaphysical experience. What is the purpose of a metaphysical experience that a person cannot remember? That's some whacky power dynamics.

Quote:
"Your second experience is a first movement of the awakening of the inner being in sleep, Ordinarily when one sleeps a complex phenomenon happens. The waking consciousness is no longer there, for all has been withdrawn within into the inner realms of which we are not aware when we are awake, though they exist; for then all that is put behind a veil by the waking mind and nothing remains except the surface self and the outward world – much as the veil of the sunlight hides from us the vast worlds of the stars that are behind it. Sleep is a going inward in which the surface self and the outside world are put away from our sense and vision. But in ordinary sleep we do not become aware of the worlds within; the being seems submerged in a deep subconscience. On the surface of this subconscience floats an obscure layer in which dreams take place, as it seems to us, but, more correctly it may be said, are recorded. When we go very deeply asleep, we have what appears to us as a dreamless slumber; but in fact dreams are going on, but they are either too deep down to reach the recording surface or are forgotten, all recollection of their having existed even is wiped out in the transition to the waking consciousness. Ordinary dreams are for the most part or seem to be incoherent, because they are either woven by the subconscient out of deep-lying impressions left in it by our past inner and outer life, woven in a fantastic way which does not easily yield any clue of meaning to the waking mind’s remembrance, or are fragmentary records, mostly distorted, of experiences which are going on behind the veil of sleep – very largely indeed these two elements get mixed up together. For in fact a large part of our consciousness in sleep does not get sunk into this subconscious state; it passes beyond the veil into other planes of being which are connected with our own inner planes, planes of supraphysical existence, worlds of a larger life, mind or psyche which are there behind and whose influences come to us without our knowledge. Occasionally we get a dream from these planes, something more than a dream,– a dream experience which is a record direct or symbolic of what happens to us or around us there. As the inner consciousness grows by sadhana, these dream experiences increase in number, clearness, coherence, accuracy and after some growth of experience and consciousness, we can, if we observe, come to understand them and their significance to our inner life. Even we can by training become so conscious as to follow our own passage, usually veiled to our awareness and memory, through many realms and the process of the return to the waking state. At a certain pitch of this inner wakefulness this kind of sleep, a sleep of experiences, can replace the ordinary subconscious slumber."

Yeah, well many it's not supposed to be remembered/experienced until after death. Man is interfering with a process bringing people back? Not that I accept or believe that. It sounds a little lame or farfetched  to me.

When NDErs do see a deity or religious prophet/figure, it as ALWAYS the one corresponding to their pre-NDE faith. This speaks volumes as to the internal projection of the experience rather than some external location being visited.

As I am not a neurologist, this is the only NDE question of interest to me.

i have wrote about my NDE on here before.

when I had this experience, i would have considered myself an atheist.  I had no faith.

i saw angels.

this doesn't seem to align with your 'ALWAYS corresponds'

also, i know of people who identify as Christian, have had a NDE, and they experienced nothing.

Not sure that's true. Atheists have ended up believing in the afterlife after an NDE. Plus there may be some interplay between the individual and the afterlife.  For example lets say that as some say the afterlife is a soul trap to get  you to reincarnate to a prison planet for whatever reasons (the ideas vary), so these entities who want to trap you show up as dead loved relatives, or pets or deities. It's a disguise based on them reading  your brain memory tapes.  Nothing is off the table here folks so speculation is allowed since we can't actually go there.

I am an atheist, but still had a strong Catholic upbringing, so am culturally contaminated. If I had an NDE, I might "see" Jesus, but highly doubtful I would "see" Mohamed.
