Small fruit problems.... * 1
    #24923830 -

What's up fellow Shroomerites!?!

I currently have 4 projects going with two different varieties of cubensis that are currently in fruit and all of my mature fruits have been very small.... Like an inch tall small, or even shorter.  Caps are opening, revealing gills when the fruit is hardly big at all, here's an example, this one is about an inch, and already mature; this little guy was labeled as "Cambodian" cubensis:

I would question the variety, and say that this variety must produce small fruits, except for the fact that I have another variety, Mazatapec, that is fruiting the exact same way.  Smaller and denser fruits.  The one constant I am experiencing though is my fruiting temperatures, ideally fruiting temps should be 68-70 right???  Well mine are closer to 60-63 f. and I believe this to be the main cause of these smaller, more compact, midget fruits.

I was wondering if anyone else is currently experiencing small fruits and also fruiting in temps below 65 degrees f.?  Its just too inefficient for me to run my furnace any more than that with these winter temps!!!

Has anyone else ever experienced very short mushrooms when fruiting in 60-63 f. temperatures???  I grew cambodians in fruiting temps of 70-80, even 95 degree temps and they turned out MUCH taller..... Guess that's not a big surprise since cubes are a tropical species anyway huh?  Lol.........

So yeah.... I guess my hypothesis would be colder fruiting temps equals smaller fruits!!!  Anyone else notice this???

                          Thanks!..... :dancer:

Have you considered a space heater in your grow area?  Like you said, they're a tropical species.  For best results, you should treat them as such.  75F gives me great results.

subs too wet:shrug:

that seems to be the constant veritable i encounter when im dealing with a 'shorties' grow. an 1/8th of those buggers will fry you good though.

Correct.  Lower temps create shorter denser fruits and the 60-63 range will do it.  Genetics are the main factor concerning fruiting size.

these fruited at 60f

not as short as threadz but not as 'premature' lookin as his pic.

not that short... threadz sub is too wet.

i was recommending misting like a mofo. its probably my fault thats how i know his might be too wet :aweshit:

Unless working with a single strain isolate results are inconclusive.  Genetic variance is the major contributing factor the size differentiation of the above compared fruits.

thats from a wet sub. no doubt in my opinion. look that the mushroom:shrug:

these are genetically small imo.

but they still look normal.

threadz shroom in the pic doesnt look normal. it looks like it came off a soaked sub. isolation talk is :blah: in this case id say.

Right.... I was just basing my assumptions on the fact that I am fruiting two varieties, and both are fruiting the same way, with these little midgets, lol, and the only constant since IT IS multi-spore is the low fruiting temperatures.....

This is the tub that the mushie pictured came from: (dark blue spot is where it was)... I picked one of the most mature as an example:

I have only misted this tub lightly once today and once yesterday.... So I don't think my conditions are too wet... Do they appear to be to you guys??  It's been about two and a half hours since today's only light misting..... I was actually thinking about misting more just to try and force the fruits to take up water! (Wishful thinking, I know!!).

                Thank you friends!!!

misting a tub too much vs soaked substrate, are way different imo. maybe its not the conditions.. but the wetsub:shrug:

if your substrate is too dry/drying out from fruit growth, you should bottom water. not mist.
i sure as shit promise you those tiny things didnt use all the water they can.. if anything?? too much water ...equals stunted growth:thumbdown:

With two separate multispore inoculations, to say genetic variance isn't the main contributing factor of fruit size differentiation is bad information.

Increase FAE if "forcing" the fruits to take up more water is desired.  The addition of more water, manually, will encourage an over saturation situation.

:justno:

in terms of what we can control? the subs moisture content is the most important. and the factor in threadz'z pics. inconclusive my butt :ass:

hes too wet.

Unless he used spores that came from stabilized short ass fruits, I dont really see how this can be an issue of short genetics

He has really short fruits from 2 different varieties over several different tubs, how can that be genetic? It show all the traits of being environmental to me.

i literally grew an identical tub just like threadz tub. ill find if a pic if i got it.

either we have a shared isolate ourselves or BOTH our subs were too wet. which is more likely?

 This is getting good! Genetics is most generally the main factor with size, but Mushboy makes a very good point...

Ok..... Now we might be getting to somethin'! Lol...... It is possible my sub is overly hydrated now that I think about it.  It is pretty heavy.... And my last tub was heavy as well, the sub didn't even really need to be dunked after the first flush but I dunked it anyway!  It produced really short fruits similar to this one even tho different variety.... And that's another one of my "constants", the way I get my sub ready, so maybe I did have too much water in my sub to begin with!!!  Damn.....

I guess the only thing I could do would be to pop out the whole sub carefully, pull the liner down off of the sides and let the sub breathe and kinda shed and evaporate some moisture overnight huh?  I wonder if that would even be worth doing tho...?  Would it be beneficial??? .....

Got these little dudes hangin' out in these shoeboxes too!

Tallest one is about an inch and a half!!!!  Maybe my sub is a little too watery...?  Could be it.

Yes, I am definitely thinking with the TWO separate multi-spore inoculations with TWO different varieties that it is likely environmental.  So.... Now I'm thinking it makes sense that my sub coulda been a little overloaded water wise, THAT coupled with 60 degree fruiting temps, which inadvertently lowers EVAPORATION rates inside the tub as well.... Coulda led to these small fruits.

      How's that sound??? Lol

This is a clone, first flush was from field capacity substrate second flush was from a soaked substrate after 12h dunk

First flush medium size fruits                        Second flush miniature fruits

This gives support to mushboys theory

control what you can control - keep that subs moisture content in check.. short shits like threadz become a ooops.. not a multi tub endeavour.
