Mold Woes.. time to fruit? (pics)
    #369284 - 08/09/01 10:33 AM (22 years, 7 months ago)

Greetings fellow growers,

I probably should have posted this in the
contamination forum, but since I am trying to SAVE the shroomys I
am growing, I am going to post it here. I am using a simple casing
method of the bottom later being perlite mixed with dirt, then the
colonized cakes, and then a later of potting soil on top of the
cakes. I have these growing in 2 containers, my 'experimental'
chamber (a hallowed out water jug) and my 'big' chamber, just a
plastic tub. I started my experimental chamber a few days before I
did my major tub so if any contamination happened, I would be able
to catch it.

After placing the colonized cakes in my experimental
jar, the started fruiting like mad. the Mycelium grew almost
completely covered the inside of the jug. I then noticed a little
bit of blueish green, but decided to ignore it thinking it was
simply bruised mycelium. Well, a day or two went by and then the
green covered almost ALL of the mycelium, as you can see in the
pic below. I suppose this jar is a loss. Amy way to save it?

Below you can see a pic of my
'main' growing tub. As you can see, at this stage the mycelium has
been growing like mad, leaving giant fluffy cotton ball like deposits
on the top layer of the soil. This has been covered for about a
week now. You can see the humidity level in the tub is pretty high
by the droplets you can see on the side. Is this ready to be
placed in the light and the cover left off to begin pinning, or
should I leave it covered in the dark for another week or so until
the mycelium completely covers the floor of the tray? I am worried
because I am starting to see signs of the same deep green coloring
starting on where the growth first broke through the dirt, and I
am worried about my entire tub being contaminated. Can I simply
scrape off this greenish mold with a spoon, or would that simply
help in causing it to spread?

Here you can see a close up
of the mycelium growing. It seems to be building UP in a cotton
ball manner as opposed to spreading along the bottom of the tray.
How 'thick' does this need to be before it can begin fruiting
mushrooms?

Thanks for the help, people.

BTW, the spore prints  i used to
colonize the cakes were ones i made myself from cube shrooms that
I found in the wild. (central florida area)

I am no expert but I think that cottony mycelia is the dreaded Cobweb Mold. Spray some H202 on it and I think it will dissolve.

I stumbled upon this right after I posted this reply.

It is not grey, it is a snowy fluffy white. It looks like a bigger version of that ya see growing in the jars.

Cobweb is gray. Mycelia is white.

it is very much mycelia, snowy white, even smells very mushroomy. I just never seen any pics of it growing into a huge cotton mound like that.

If it is mycelium then i read that you should cover the high spots with dirt so that the whole casing will be covered at the same time, giving a more even flush of mushrooms.

But doesent that cotteny white mycelium sorta dry up a little and then start to pin? wont covering it with more dirt just make it take a longer time to pin?

Yes, that mycelium will start to pin... You cover it up with a bit of moist verm. (or the dirt) so that the rest of the mycelium (which is under all the other dirt) can "catch up" to the patches of mycelium that have already surfaced. This way, all the mycelium will begin to pin around the same time, which will: a) increase yeilds, and b) make it easier for you to pick the shrooms...
