Any other Socialists on this forum? * 1
    #24833271 -

I haven't seen enough red around these parts. Below I have listed introductory reading if you are interested in socialism. Read these whether you are interested in promoting socialism, or critiquing it.

What is our basic doctrine?
Why Socialism by Albert Einstein:
https://monthlyreview.org/2009/05/01/why-socialism/

That sounds great on paper, but how has it worked in real life?

Economic Development, Political-Economic System, and the Physical Quality of Life by Shirley Cereseto, PhD, and Howard Waitzkin, MD, PhD:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1646771/pdf/amjph00269-0055.pdf

But what of the individual?
The Soul of Man Under Socialism by Oscar Wilde:
https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/wilde-oscar/soul-man/

But hasn't socialism lead to millions of deaths?

An exploration of China's mortality decline under Mao: A provincial analysis, 1950–80 by Kimberly Singer Babiaraz et al.:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4331212/

But don't you want to take away my guns?
In Defense of Self Defense by Huey P. Newton:
https://genius.com/Huey-p-newton-in-defense-of-self-defense-june-20-1967-annotated

Still here? Awesome! Now its time to read some theory. The order here is not important.

Manufacturing Consent: Political Economy of the Mass Media by Noam Chomsky.
https://focalizalaatencion.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/herman-chomsky-2002-manufacturingconsent.pdf
This is essential for understanding the flow of information in capitalist society.

Confessions of an Economic Hit Man by John Perkins.
http://resistir.info/livros/john_perkins_confessions_of_an_economic_hit_man.pdf
This explains the criminal methods that the US government and international corporations use to meddle in the affairs of foreign states.

Now its time for the big man himself. Start with the first few chapters of Capital: A Critique of Political Economy by Karl Marx.
https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/download/pdf/Capital-Volume-I.pdf
There is no need to read the whole thing right away. Take your time. If it doesn't make sense, don't worry about it too much. Move on and come back to it once you have a better grasp of his terminology. Don't listen to anyone who tells you to start with his earlier work or god forbid with the Communist Manifesto.

Most importantly, always look for ways to challenge your ideas. Don't limit your reading to any one political philosophy. Never stop questioning and never stop leaning.

Convinced? Great! Is there a union in your workplace? Join it. If not? Start one! Or better yet, join the IWW. Is there an Anarchist bookstore, Trotskyist newspaper, or Maoist red guard in your town? Check it out! See if they can convince you of their particular interpretation of socialist literature. They didn't convince me, but it is good to have friends of all stripes.

Constitutional essays. By America's own.

https://www.congress.gov/resources/display/content/The+Federalist+Papers

Quote:
Among the most formidable of the obstacles which the new Constitution will have to encounter may readily be distinguished the obvious interest of a certain class of men in every State to resist all changes which may hazard a diminution of the power, emolument, and consequence of the offices they hold under the State establishments; and the perverted ambition of another class of men, who will either hope to aggrandize themselves by the confusions of their country, or will flatter themselves with fairer prospects of elevation from the subdivision of the empire into several partial confederacies than from its union under one government.

Venezuela is not, and has never been a socialist country. Under Chavez, a number of excellent reforms where implemented in an attempt to move the country towards socialism, but these where ultimately unsuccessful. Between 1999 and 2011--during Chavez's term in office--the private sectors share of economic activity increased from 65 percent to 71 percent. Venezuela is and has always been a poor nation, saddled with extreme economic sanctions, who's economy is dominated by the private sector. In any such nation, economic collapses should be expected to occur periodically. The solution? Socialism.

If you read the second link I provided, you will see ample evidence for how socialism has worked in many countries in the past and provided much better standards of living to their people than capitalist countries, relative to their wealth.

I am not sure what you are asking. Assuming that a country has people, food, infrastructure, and weapons for self defense, then--under socialism--"the state going broke" is not a concern. That is sort of the whole point. These things wont just magically disappear. Famines, plagues, natural disasters, corruption, and invasion or influence from outside countries are still issues in socialist countries, but these occur in capitalist countries as well, so if you critique is "What if disease kills all your crops? Then what are you going to do? Checkmate socialists" then I think you are going to have to go back to the drawing board with that one.

"is not a concern"

Sure it is, borrowing money to fund social services is a major concern for socialist nations.

You do realize socialists usually promise more than they can deliver?  As a result they go to the debt markets to make up the difference and that isn't sustainable over the long term.

Well, the most recent example is Greece, but to be perfectly honest, most of these EU nations are insolvent.

My political philosophy would indeed be labeled socialist.

It's considered a welfare state, are you suggesting Greece isn't a socialist nation?

A socialist nation is one in which the workers control their workplaces. This is very different from a welfare state. Greece is most certainly not a socialist nation.

Here is the link to a video that will help to show how welfare states have nothing to do with socialism:

So instead of me listing the countries that declared themselves as "socialist", why don't you give us your examples, or does this concept just exist in theoretical land?

I think it's important to define the terms before we go forward.  Something tells me he wouldn't accept the current State's that define themselves as "socialist".

Why don't you try it before dismissing it.

Greece does not define itself socialist.

Yes, but these nations do. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_socialist_states

I don't think the OP considers China, Cuba, Laos and Vietnam as HIS ideal socialist states.

"Why don't you try it before dismissing it"

Try what?
