maybe you should experience his land reforms.

"Land reforms" are invariably code words for stealing the land from the rightful owners so that it can be given to crooked political cronies as a reward for doing the dictator's dirty work.

Six additional farms to be seized in Cojedes State

President Hugo Ch?vez Sunday praised governor Y?nez Rangel on his move to intervene estates such as British-owned El Charcote cattle ranch (Photo: Enio Perdomo)

Cojedes Governor Johnny Y?nez Rangel said that they intend to check land ownership and review the boundaries to regulate any abnormality. According to him, all of this would be made under the legal framework, because the idea is to recover land productivity.

EL UNIVERSAL

Land interventions in Cojedes State will continue next Wednesday. In this way, the decree issued by Cojedes Governor Johnny Y?nez Rangel with regard to 16 estates will be enforced. Following the effective intervention of El Charcote farm last Saturday, regional authorities plan to seize several properties of the Boulton family in Cojedes, such as Gavinero, Yaguara, San Jos? and La Flecha.

Rafael Alem?n, the Cojedes State Secretary-General, said under this schedule of interventions, Paraima and Pi?ero -both properties of the Branger family- will be intervened next January 13th and 14th, respectively.

Particularly concerning El Charcote, Alem?n stated that the work of the ad-hoc technical commission would start on Monday.

Under the decree of intervention issued by Governor Y?nez Rangel, the commission will have up to 90 days to complete its work.

The members of the taskforce should review the productivity in the plot of land, the deeds submitted by Agroflora -the company that manages the estate- and the status of the occupiers of some hectares.

The ad-hoc technical commission will be working for a total term of six months.

During his intervention in President Hugo Ch?vez' weekly radio and TV program "Hello, President!", Governor Y?nez Rangel said that they intend to check land ownership and review the boundaries to regulate any abnormality. According to him, all of this would be made under the legal framework, because the idea is to recover land productivity.

Y?nez Rangel said that the works of the ad-hoc technical commission would not curb operations in the estates.

Is this really all you can come up with? Provisional accounts by opposition bloggers? For only one, municipal election?

The turnout in that last election was slightly more than 30%, which is 7% up compared to the previous election of the same kind. Not a lot, but then those are very local and minor elections.

What about other elections? Did Chavez rig the referendum? Did the opposition not forge loads of signatures in order to obtain it? Did the opposition not start its opposition effort by an illegal coup?

What about my other questions? What about freedom of expression?

I expected better from you, but I admit anything 'better' is going to be hard to find, despite all the spin there is on Venezuela. Sometimes reality is too obvious to get majorly twisted.

5% of the population own 80% of the land in Venezuela. You're against re-distributing idle land and farms owned by foreigners to feed his own people?

I believe land reform is a good thing if done the right way. Chavez is not going about it the right way. Rather than forcefully sieze land from others, it would prove to be much more effective if he simply taxed the value of the land, thus providing an incentive to only take as much land as you are going to use.

The link I provided has links to over a dozen other sources. The bloggers you so disdainfully refer to are almost without exception VENEZUELAN bloggers. They were there. They took pictures.

I don't know about you, but given Chavez's track record of behavior towards those who oppose him, I as a Venezuelan voter sure wouldn't want to vote against him when the only way to do so is to have my fingerprint appear on the ballot showing I voted against him.

But that's just me.

Chavez is a typical corrupt Latin American thug politico. He stole the 2004 election while pulling the wool entirely over Jimmy Carter's eyes (admittedly not a difficult thing to do) and he will rig every succeeding election to make sure he stays in power.

Can't be any more rigged than our elections, democracy doesn't mean shit these days. I'm starting to question if it ever has.

In what way does this rule out extreme spin? Why don't you cite trustworthy news sources, for a change?

What exactly is that track record?

Sources?

and, still running:
Did the opposition not forge loads of signatures in order to obtain it [the referendum]?
Did the opposition not start its opposition effort by an illegal coup?
[see also: How democratic is the US-supported coup-staging opposition?]
How many privately employed journalists has Chavez jailed?
How many coup-supporting private media has he shut down?
[BTW, I wonder what would happen in the US if a media outlet made itself guilty of outright treason or, at least, overt support for the most blatant violation of the Constitution?]
In what way has he ever curbed freedom of expression?

Like I said before: I'm curious.

You mean the fingerprint system installed to prevent people from voting more than once?

Chavez doesn't need to rig any elections in Venezuela, every reliable news source from the BBC to CNN notes Chavez' approval rating is in the 60s-70s, guaranteeing a victory next election. Fairly.

I presumed your point was that public opinion polls
are worthless because sadaam (supposedly) had a
rating of 98% acceptance.

I don't feel that's a reasonable means of debunking
chavez's popularity vis a vis polling because, unlike
sadaam, he isn't a murderous ruler with the air of
imminent death for detractors hanging overhead.

make sense?
