Blackening seeds on WBS?
    #2480637 -

Hi. I have a bunch of WBS jars that have been going for about a week, and are about 80% colonized. The strange thing is some of the seeds have turned black! It looks like the surface of the seeds has dissolved. I think this is because the mycelium may have been feeding on the seeds, then scraped off by other seeds after shaking, leaving behind half eaten seeds. But I'm not sure. Can anyone tell me if this is normal, or should I chuck these?

Hmmm.....hard to tell from what your saying. I do know that turning black is not good.

Yeah, it doesn't seem like a good thing at all, really. The mycelium seems happy enough to grow back over the blackened seeds, though.

Oh, and on further inspection, it seems some of the blackness has flaked off some seeds, revealing a light tan color underneath. This may just be the seed covering coming off.
