Pennington bird seed problems

Has anyone else used pennington bird seed as thier wbs and had problems with it? My cakes develope well, but then they fail to fruit. I know my fruiting chamber is ok because i just got a digital hygrometer. I fan and mist, and yet, nothing happens. Also, after dunking cakes of my wbs just won't start to regenerate after the shock of being broke up, even after more than a week. this situation really confuses me because the myc grows fine, but then fails to fruit, or gives like 1 or 2 pins from a couple of test dunk and rolls i did. Could the genetics have been damaged to the point where it cant fruit?

case it, i don't think wbs is really for cakes more so casings, i have used pennington in the past no problems

I'm not a "cake" sort of guy, but will chime in here.

Solid bird seed (WBS) cakes don't retain water well, nor rehydrate well. Mix in some coir, and/or some Verm into the mix, to resolve that issue.

These babies don't really need a COLD SHOCK. Imho, that is WAY OVER-RATED. Just a 6 or 8 degree temp drop does the trick, along with light cycles (12/12) & FAE.

You should try gently breaking up a fully colonized cake (of any sort)& use it as SPAWN into pasturized h/poo, in a tray.

Many peep's just try to hard to help myc along, and in so doing F/U the works.

Colonized WBS, spawned to h-poo/compost @ 20% rate by volume.

Covered with cling wrap, cling wrap slit & slit covered with Micropore tape, to allow gas exchange.

Incubated in total darkness at room temps (h-poo/compost generates a lot of heat - inside itself).

Once fully colonized, casing mix of peat/verm/coir (pH adjusted) added about 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep. Incubated a few more days in darkness.

Once myc starts popping out.


Expose to 12/12 light cycle & FAE

And - you get knot's & pin formation. :wink:

Hmmm, i think a few corrections are need to what i previously said:
1. I was using the term cakes in that i noc'ed pint jars full of grain but then i cased them and they did nothing - i only dunk'ed and rolled when the casing refused to start colonizing the casing layer or recouperating at all.
2. I wasn't really cold shocking, i put them in my fridge so they would last longer before I took a few and cased them. I did that so ammonia wouldn't build up, but it did anyway.

So, thanks for that tip on adding in something else when incubating for the first time pre casing. Do you have a specific ratio of verm to wbs that you like?

1 part verm, 2 parts coir, 3 parts WBS. Shake right after PC'ing. Inoculate ASAP after they are cooled to room tempurature (cool overnight).

I know that there are two kinds of coir, the one you are referring to is the same as the one used for casing material, right?

and also, where can i get coir this late in the growing season, and do i need to balance the ph with caco3?
