Penningtons Finch Seed Method
    #342136 - 06/16/01 11:17 AM (22 years, 5 months ago)

After searching far and wide in this horrible town, I finally ran across someone who carried Penningtons Finch Seed... after boiling it for about .. 2 hours i rinsed it.. and then let it strain for about 45min to an hour... afterwards.. i loaded the jars and innoculated (after steaming.. etc. etc.) however.. i noticed after i was done.. there was a little bit of water collecting at the bottom of the jar.. Anyone think this will cause a big problem? its been a little over a week.. and so far i see no signs of colonization..

May slow things down, but hopefully you'll be ok. Next time add some vermiculite with your seed to allow for the excess water to be absorbed.

Tired of pimping yourself on the corner to afford spores? Well throw out that red dress and go to the FSR, for spores even you can afford.

Also boiling it for 2 hours is an overkill.
I steep mine for 40 minutes, drain a little, add a little vermiculite and gypsum and PC for 1 hour.

Anno - I usually fill a 1L jar with dry seed (for measuring) then steep. How much gypsum would you reccomend adding?

Not much, like perhaps 1 g for pint jar.

No doubt, 2 hrs is a looooong time to boil. Most of the nutes probably went through the strainer. I like to presoak for a day or two.

Don't give up on your jars yet. Birdseed seems to germ right after you give up on it. With water in the bottom, it doesn't sound like they've dried out. Give'em another week or so before you give up on 'em.
