you're in luck.
been playing with birdseed awhile now.
just take your seed,
add enough water to cover,
simmer, adding water as needed (it will be absorbed), for 1 hour.
drain off excess water.
mix seed 1:1 with verm. and fill your jars pf-style.
pressure cook at 15 psi at least 45 minutes to sterilize.
let cool.
enjoy!

I use a mix of 2:1 finch seed to verm, and its probably to much vermiculite as well.
The mushrooms fruit fine from cakes or casing though with the 2:1 finch/verm seed mix.

As for judgeing water content, after you cook the finch seed, and mix in the vermiculite, add a little water at a time... mix real good, the pull a small handfull out and squeeze. The water should be just barely dripping. That is the perfect water point to pressure cook them.
If you squeeze and a lot of water comes out, your way to wet and will probably get wet spot bacteria down the road.
