finch seed tek
    #468210 - 11/24/01 05:33 PM (21 years, 15 days ago)

ok, in the first step of the finch seed tek it says to steep the seed for 45-60 minutes. How much water should you use? FOAF tried a 3:2 water to seed ratio and that didn't work out (had to boil it for another hour to get sxcess water off).

Doesn't matter how much water you use. Just drain it after steeping. Rinse the seed too, to prevent too much clumping and make shaking easier.

The recipe said specifically not to strain the seeds. It said the water created from this steeping was very nutrient-rich

I'm not familiar with that tek, In fact the last tek I read was back when the Honey Water Tek came out. If the tek calls for the shaking of the jars at any point, I think my advice should be good.
I will agree that the water left from steeping is nute rich, but IMO it is not very useful unless you are using it to dampen a cake-type substrate.

You can disregard my post, and hopefully someone having experience with the tek in question may be of some help.

good luck

i rinse off teh seeds when theyre fresh and dry to get the shit off the outside then microwave (or you could boil) in water where the seeds are covered well but not just in a huge pot of water. then i let it cool a little, drain the excess water without rinsing again and spoon into jars. no contams so far with the millet but im micing, not boiling. i boil jars for 1 hr or so afterward (wether theyre half pint or quart).

I'm with Ralph. Drain. Too much water in your jars will cause them to stall (cease growing) because it will carmalyze your seed. You need to rinse as well as drain. It sounds as if you are using Ryche Hawks method. Keep reading further down on his tek and you will see he corrects himself. Why he dosen't just revise it and put it online correctly is beyond me. It's kinda confusing. Maybe just try the Micron Magic sites tek first. It's not as easy to screw up as Hawks perhaps.

Soak the seed Finch seed overnight and then rinse it with distilled water until it runs clear. Then boil at a low temperature for about 30 minutes. Drain off excess water, don't over boil it will get sticky and burn . Sticky wet finch seed will absolutely not work with most strains of P. Cubensis. I made the mistake of making 4 jars of rye/millet and didn't rinse them. The results were disasterous. I've lost 3 of the jars and the two that are left survived cause I mixed a little extra vermiculite in them. I think using a top layer of vermiculite is great cause it will absorb extra water in the jars when you pressure cook. Wet sticky substrate is the worst. I believe it's better if you make your substrate too dry than too wet. Keep in mind that you are going to be adding water when you innoculate. I've also found that it's better to use smaller amounts of spore water when innoculating, especially if you see water droplets in the jar already. Just add more spores to your syringe water then you can use less water to inoculate, like say 1cc. Finch seed is great for growing tropical Cubies. They love it and the seed is easy to shake up. I like to mix Oat Groats in my finch seed substrate. Maybe I'll post my recipe someday.

Peace,

Catzeye

Im not sure if this will help, but i use Millet and soak it approx 4-6hours max in distilled water, drain it completely, then add 2 1/2 cups of verm to every 1 cup of moist millet, and then I add about 1/4 cup of rye or BRF to make it stick together and wallah! I have a millet cake... oops ofcourse i add water to the mix in the usual pf ratio
