First try at preparing bird seed.

Failure.

Followed dethheads tek, seeds clumped and exploded. I'm letting an unknown ammount soak in an unknown ammount of water. Ill let it soak untill i get home tommorow from work, and continue following anno's tek....

Well Ive had sucess and failure with the DH method. I think the best is just to rise the birdseed, let soak overnight, simmer a little while and then just PC it. Rinse as much as possible too.

Last night i let the bird seed sit for 6 hours, rinsed with cold then hot tap water, and then rinsed again with distilled and let sit for another 6 hours or so in distilled water. Then did the rinse again and prepared some jars. I also put a towel inbetween the tray and the bottom of the PC this time.

These ones turned out much better, only the bottom mm or so was sticky and clumped, but some REALLY REALLY hard shaking and pounding broke it up. Im gonna go ahead and give these a try anyway. It dosnt look like many of the seeds exploded, they were just kinda sticking together. (can i get any comments on this in particular?)
Since i was preparing half a bag of seed i still have quite a bit soaking. After work ill give it another rinse and try it again.

I took Anno's advise and used 2/3 birdseed: 1/3 water... No rinse, no nouthing... just measure, and pressure cook... Worked like a charm..... try it!...

Thats what i did the first time, all the kernals exploded. The second time i soaked for ~12 hours worked like a charm. The third set i let soak for >24 hours and again exploded all the kernals. So I think the problem isnt with soaking, but with tempurature. So i think anno's SHOULD work, im gonna experiment around a bit more to find out what it is.

Ok so for the update, the second set of jars (the ones that came out fine) have show signs of rapid growth after 3 days. Yesterday after checking there was 0% (veiwable) growth, today i checked and id say 10-15% of the pint's worth of seed was coverd with bright white mycellium. So i gave the jars a few little shakes to mix around the millet. Now all i gotta do now is hope the contaims stay away. =D

I have to say ive done about 9 jars of bird seed, only three have worked out, but i still preffer this method way over BRF.

i agree with roadkill but let me qualify that..birdseed and quart jars are a bitch! try 1/2 pts. fill the jar 3/4 full and your water level 1/8 of an inch above the top of the birdseed. 1/2 pts can be shaken MUCH MUCH easier & colonize like lightening i know a lot of people will disagree with me, but i wholeheartedly think you will like 1/2 pts lots better.

Well, ill definitly give it a try

24hr Update: 2 jars have a little more growth, 1 jar jumped up to prolly about 45%

Update: The second set of jars are ready to use =D

I definatly like bird seed over BRF, its less work al the way around, and ive never had a BRF jar germinate in the time its taken these to colonize. Bird seed is definatly the way to go.
