So I go into the pet store the other day to get some kittylitter and I decide to look at the different types of bird seed they had, they have a bunch and I remember hearing somewhere on the net you want to have bird seed that has , mostly red or whtie(some other colour?) millet and other than that you will be fine
??????????????thoughts???????????????
I saw many kinds of seed and I was looking for a "general rule of tumb" for buying birdseed for shroomies, anything I should watch out for???, things that shroomies dont like in the seed??
the bags I looked at had ALOT of different ingredents
and I know that the first thing listed is what the bag has the most of and so on , so what should I look for?
thanks.............and is bird seed going to be as much of a difference in growing, than BRF ,as I hear
Birdseed substrate cased with a simple verm casing?sound good for a first timer case?
thank you for your time Psilocybeing

Watch out for fungicide coatings on the seed. It is said it can be washed off, but its better to avoid it in the first place. Check the label for additives. IME, mycelium will colonize every type of seed I have thrown at it (even little sticks in the mix), so the above is your only worry.

Actually I'd really like to hear what you have to say about Wal-Mart, maybe some reasons as to why I shouldn't shop there either. Seriously. Make a post or something in a different forum if this isn't the place, because I'm actually interested. (I'm really not trying to be an ass-I'm serious) -Mr.Sleep

Because Wal-mart makes $270 billion a year and everyone who reads adbusters must hate Wal-Mart.

Ya I read adbusters! so what !
Did you ever think I hate Walmart for bigger reasons than that, like say because they ........being the biggest employer in America drag standards down across the country , and now you sick "little" megastores have come to my country .....ahhhh how sweet!
the other biggest employer in America (if you can call them that is Manpower, a temp firm! also draging down labour standards, you see while I hate Walmart for the walton family , do some searching on the net see for yourself what these assholes fund ,I dont like that fact most of the products are child labour and that they are horrible for the enviroment , but WHAT ALSO BOTHERS ME , something YOU might just ASSUME doesnt is..............
The absolute destruction of labour standars to the point where Walmart is the norm

afoaf has been looking at alot of seed, and he noticed alot of brands have sunflowers, sunflower kernels, corn, and cracked corn...is all this safe to use? He thinks that soaking kernels and the such would be bad and create some kind of mold...oh yeah, he found some seed at petCo that is produced by the audobon society and it looks like a whole lot of white millet, but it's 10.00$ for like 5lbs!! he was thinking of getting it, but then he seen a 10lb bag of finch seed for just about the same amount.

Kaytee brand Wild Bird Seed 'Garden Valley' is what my friend uses. Costs $5 for a 20 lbs bag.

Whatever you do, do not buy any type of Hartz brand seed. It isn't coated with fungiside but it's already been washed and it's a lot softer than most seed, meaning it explodes easily and gets waterlogged a lot easier, which means bacteria contamination which is something you don't want.
The best bet if just to go to a chain supermarket and buy generic birdseed, the cheap stuff, or go to a feed store and get just regular wild bird seed.
