Bird seed substrate, is just a fancy way of saying use bird seed for colonization. An easy recipie with birdseed is to take two cups of birdseed and wash good in distilled water(incase of birdcote). Then pour in a large pot and fill up with water until its about 1/2 inch above seed. Bring this to a boil and then  lower to a medium temp for simmering. Keep adding water. The birdseed will double in size. Next drain off any excess and put the seed in a large bowl. Mix dry vermiculite in with the seed ( enough to keep seed from becoming sticky). Now fill jars about half full and pressurecook as normal.:)

Most strains grow well with birdseed. The problem is getting the moisture content right. Sometimes its either to dry or too wet. Brown rice flour works well if you can keep it airy and not gummy. Both work well if made corrctly.:)bluhoney

Hey, do you think chicken feed would work? I havent acully used it but i let some soak and it looks like it also contains rye berrys and corn in addition to finch seed. So actully it looks like it should work, just wanted some feed back cuz i dont have any verm and was goin to substitute coir. Is this a good idea?

thanks,

I might have to buy a PC huh?
Ive been looking for a good deal on ebay.
Any one know where i can get a good one cheap?( has to be under a hundered)
Thanks,

Lack of a PC could be a problem, actually. With grains, which can (and often do) harbor endospores, a PC is a necessity. I got a 22qt cooker at Meijer for $90 that works quite well. Also check out Ebay.
*MY FRIEND* grows on finch seed... check out Ryche Hawk's tek on finch seed. It works pretty well.

Has anyone ever tried a 1/2 and 1/2 substrate? I got one going rite now.It Made it threw the jar stage and,I have it cased with strait verm. It's just BRF Verm PF. style with some wett seed mix in it.Anyone ever use this before?Has any one ever used thistle for a substrate before. It looks like it would work great, its like a gormay finch seed, full of nutriants.
