Bird seed substrate, is just a fancy way of saying use bird seed for colonization. An easy recipie with birdseed is to take two cups of birdseed and wash good in distilled water(incase of birdcote). Then pour in a large pot and fill up with water until its about 1/2 inch above seed. Bring this to a boil and then lower to a medium temp for simmering. Keep adding water. The birdseed will double in size. Next drain off any excess and put the seed in a large bowl. Mix dry vermiculite in with the seed ( enough to keep seed from becoming sticky). Now fill jars about half full and pressurecook as normal.:)

Most strains grow well with birdseed. The problem is getting the moisture content right. Sometimes its either to dry or too wet. Brown rice flour works well if you can keep it airy and not gummy. Both work well if made corrctly.:)bluhoney

Lack of a PC could be a problem, actually. With grains, which can (and often do) harbor endospores, a PC is a necessity. I got a 22qt cooker at Meijer for $90 that works quite well. Also check out Ebay. *MY FRIEND* grows on finch seed... check out Ryche Hawk's tek on finch seed. It works pretty well. *FanaTEK*
