The easiest way to do it is in a rice cooker, with 1 part seed 1.5 part mineral water.

Go ahead and make more than you need, the seed at the bottom will be kind of gunky and stuck to the bottom, you don't want to put that seed in your jars..

If i don't have a rice cooker, what else could be used. Any homemade or easy quick fixes?

Here's how I prepare my bird seed: In a large pot, combine dry birdseed with an equal volume of water. (Cooked seed occupies a little over twice as much space as dry seed. In other words, one cup of dry seed will yield about two cups of substrate once it has been cooked. When preparing my seed, I use one cup of dry seed for every quart jar I want to cook up. Since my cooker holds seven quart jars, for each batch I combine seven cups of dry seed with seven cups of water in a big pot. Got it? Good...) Turn up the heat and bring this mix to a rolling boil, stirring frequently. Once it is boiling, turn down the heat (probably the "low" setting. You may have to experiment a bit till you find the right temperature) and cover the pot with a tightly fitting lid. Let the seed simmer for 45 minutes. It is very important that you do not remove the lid, and more importantly that you do not stir the mix while it is simmering!! If you stir it, it will turn into a gooey mess. I have ruined a few loads of birdseed by fucking with it while it was simmering! Anyway, when the 45 minutes are up, remove the pot from the burner, fluff the seed with a fork, and load into the jars of your preference. I hope this helped you out more than the posts above.

my method with birdseed differs from Placebos.
I double my water to birdseed.
I use bottled water, never use tap water, and bring it to a mild boil.
Turn down the heat to low. stir often.
Cook for 45 minutes. Turn off the heat.
Let it sit for about an hour.
Most of the water is absorbed by the birdseed and it is fluffed up.
There is usualy only a 1/2 cup of water or so left in the bottom of the pot with the birdseed.
Allow to cool and mix 2 to 1 , birdseed to verm.
Slowly add in water. Mix real well.

Squeeze unitl the water is barely dripping. Then the moisture level is perfect.
Load jars with dry verm layer.
Pressure cook at 15 psi for 45 minutes.

I have done this about 7 times now with great success. Although this method was given to me by www.thehawkseye.com and it works well.
