Wild Bird Seed or Wild Bird Food?
    #6342137 - 12/06/06 09:54 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Any difference in the two names?

Do I have the wrong materials?

I use wild bird feed. Just have to get all the sunflower seeds and other crap out and it works great. The junk you don't want floats to the top and you can scoop it out with a strainer.

It's not worth your time getting out the sunflower seeds/"floaters" out. Your jar will colonize with them in just fine, and some of the old hands say that sunflower seeds provide elements that could potentially increase potency.

Same difference.

I actually wondered if someone would actually ask this as I picked a bag of WBF yesterday.

And also, when I rinse the grain, the sunflower seeds kinda get drained off into the sink because it floats. I just let it go.

:hehehe: I have to also admit to this. I didn't want to post because I thought it was a stupid question but I guess not.

I don't even really like birdseed and would rather use rye any day but as long as your bird seed doesn't have any weird coatings on it its usable,as far as sunflower seeds go,I would try to take some out if there are an abundance of them but leaving them in isn't going to cause any problems either, scoop out what you can and leave the rest in there no reason to get all anal and freak out about it

Don't worry too much about floaters or sunflower seeds. I've colonized many, many jars and left it in with no problems. People say that the stuff adds lignon.

Like someone else said, just get penningtons from walmart. I get the regular small bags that are clear and cost $.94. I got a big bag of penningtons once, had ton of sunflower seeds. Prefer the small clear one!

When autoclaving bird seed, anyone else like the smell it makes in the kitchen?

Basically any kind will do. Just don't spend $4. on a small bag from petco or anything. it the same as the walmart or Fry's brands. And as far as the whole straining sunflower seeds out, I don't even know why its a big deal. Whether they in or not, myc will grow just fine. But the bringing up of rye in this thread makes me think. I never used rye but I know lots here put their souls on it being better then WBS. Why is this people? What makes the rye super fly?

WBS is very inexpensive spawn.
Rye costs a bit more & is a great spawn grain.
Advantage of rye, is you can fruit it out as substrate, by itself.
Far far better than wbs.

Damned fast mini bulk grow is rye spawn to coir 50/50 ratio.
(colonizes so fast it's scary)
Cased with 50/50+

LOL, a 50/50/50/50+ grow

Rye is always great for me where as when I use birdseed I don't get as good results,it seems to take much longer to colonize and many times it is hard to get the moisture content right,Rye just works every time.I dont mind spending the extra money for rye,for me its well worth it

LOL good one...so rye-wbs-coir-verm?  I'm planning my next one, and I'm thinking hard about going to rye...I like the results that so many people seem to have...and those pics!!  I'll keep researching for now, but sure seems like the way to go.... :stoned:

Personally, I avoided the 'floater' question by buying a "100% edible" "no waste" birdseed. That is to say, one containing no shells (does contain shelled sunflower seeds).
