Wild bird seed for spawn?

Is it ok to use wild bird seed for a spawn? How long shouyld it take for the mycelium to fill up the jar? Also, is it better to just put the cakes right side up in a tupewear container wihtouyt dirt, or is it better to break the cakes up in some compost? Which will yeild more?

my dood uses birdseed, it will work just swell, and thats all he uses, no verm
or anything, except a dry layer on top is still a good idea to help prevent contam

also, you want to make sure to get the birdseed without sunflower seeds, if you can't get it without, you can put the birdseed in a bowl of water and the sunflower seeds will float and then can be easily extracted...

Uh oh. I started them and I did not take the sunflower seeds out. Will everything still work out ok? How muych should I yield off of each cake if everything goes well?

Sunflower seeds are fine, I wonder where people read that crap. Oh ribbit, how are you gonna have a dry verm layer if you have to shake up the birdseed to break up the clumps (right after PC) and again to help speed along mycelia growth?
