doc wilds wbs tek
    #3980134 - 03/28/05 02:20 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

This is my first attempt at using wbs. I followed the tek exactly but after I pc the jars I looked at the wbs and there are a lot of bird seed that is broken open. Before I pc the jars the bird seed looked good, not a lot of broken seed. I pc the jars for about an hour and they are shakable. Are these jars worth shooting with spores or should I just start over?
Thanks for the help.

Yes, if you followed the TEK exactly you removed a good amount of the broken seed before PC'ing, the floaters. Some seeds will split open during PC'ing. Normal. Your WBS should be fine to use. Good Luck.

As HippieChick said, you're fine. Don't bother removing seeds, shells, hulls, sticks or anything else if it's extra trouble. It will all get colonized in the end.

Hey Diver, what's up? Yeah, I like Doc's TEK, but He is very anal about removing ALL the floater's. Understand now that these floater's might actually have some nutritional value. Is this true?

How are ya HC? No more nutritional value than anything else, it's just time consuming to remove stuff that is harmless if left in.

Thanks Diver. I don't mind doing it, just wanted to know if it was better to leave them in. Catch ya later.

Thank you everyone. I just enjected 3cc of liquid mycelium into each jar. How long before I should see any growth?

Under perfect conditions, total darkness, and 86 degrees, you could see signs of life in 3-5 days. Should notice something in about a week. Good Luck.

That sounds about right with a multispore injection, assuming perfect conditions as you stated.  However, under perfect conditions w/ liquid culture, earlier growth is definately not unheard of.  Have seen rye quarts fully colonized after 6 days from a good liquid culture inoculation... :stoned:

86F is a little HIGH. Jars generate a degree of internal heat - themselves.

Suggest an incubation temp of 80F.. (+/- a degree or 2).

As far as "floaters" in WBS. Leave them in. Hulls & sunflower seeds make up most of the floaters. Both provide lignin (a good thing) & sunflower seed husks(being an oil seed)provide more lignin & the internal part provides fatty oils that are are also a good thing.

As far as "simmering", I don't. No need - if you do soak properly. (but each has an opinion about it).

SOAKING.... isn't about the amount of TIME - WBS SOAKS.

It is about HYDRATING the seed - to its natural MAXIMUM moisture holding capacity.

There is NO SET RULE ON SOAKING TIME. 12/24/36 hours all works.
(so long as seeds DON'T GERMINATE)

Fill container 2/3rds to 3/4 full of WBS. Allow to soak until seed has expanded (from absorbing moisture) around 25% (+/- a few %). Which is ALL the seed will expand from natural hydration of moisture.

(simple - fill container 2/3rds full - it expands to almost fill the container - moisture level is good to go)

Simmering may add a few more percent of moisture. But, if simmered, (at least with me) - some seeds get soft / mushy - burst & split open. Which -(IMHO)- isn't a good thing. As it releases starch, which can cause the WBS to become sticky, clump & hard to shake - after PC'ing.

In my experiance, jars with a lot of burst seeds, don't colonize as fast, or as well as jars without a lot of burst seeds.

Moreover, if the mix is a bit wet, burst seeds create a paste like gunk in the bottom parts of the jar, which is prone to wet spot bacteria, or doesn't colonize (not a good thing).

If inoculating with spores. Germination can take from 5 to 12 days (average). Germination will look a bit off/white - cloudy & thin, as it is in it's infancy. Once well germinated & myc begins to thrive & grow, it turns snow white & colonization begins.

If inoculating with a liquid culture, you often see myc take a foothold in 12 hours, turn white - in a few more hours, then begin to colonize very fast (as it was already germinated - so it skips that initial time span).

Below is a picture of a multi/spore inoculated WBS jar - on DAY 6.

you can plainly veiw the angle/path the spore laden fluid followed - from point of injection.

just out of curiosity when it comes to liquid culture what have u guys found out works best I've heard of malt extract and sugar there have to be more things with some better nutrition and I know most ppl use liquid grow teks to multiply spores and to inoculate with mycelium.. but I found a document on this very site talking about how the mycelium contain psilocybin would it not be faster to just use liquid and strain it with a coffee filter and take the good stuff

There is no difference in principle between sharpening perception with an external instrument, such as a microscope, and sharpening it with an internal instrument, such as one of these...drugs. If they are an affront to the dignity of the mind, the microscope is an affront to the dignity of the eye and the telephone to the dignity of the ear. Strictly speaking, these drugs do not impart wisdom at all, any more than the microscope alone gives knowledge. They provide the raw materials of wisdom, and are useful to the extent that the individual can integrate what they reveal into the whole pattern of his behavior and the whole system of his knowledge
