Okay folks np here... I was just caught off guard. This thread was meant to be my grow log anyway, and this vendor stuff is getting drawn out. Truth is I would _rather_ deal with known-good vendors that have a good reputation anyway. It has been illuminating, and helpful to know that the sponsors are sponsors 'cuz they could cut the mustard. I think largely I just got the wrong impression from my initial feedback. 'Nuff said. I got jars a cookin... :-p

Good enough, just didnt want to see you get discouraged here like its some sort of "HighTimes" advertising going on..push all crap for whoever pays you money.. Theres a growlog section here too, but I think you need a month here and like 40 posts before you can view it..

Quick Pressure Cooker Tip... [Re: mojo23]

Here's a quick tip in case you folks have the same troubles I had with a leaking pressure cooker. I am using the American Standard 925 aluminum pressure cooker from Wisconson Aluminum Foundry. It is old, second hand, but still ideal for cooking the jars. Problem I had was that the lid was not seating properly. Try as I might I was having bubbles and water escaping from one side of the lid, and could not get the pressure up over about 7psi. I just about killed my hands trying to tightend the bakelite handles even more (using towels as a heat buffer, of course!).
Then my brother had the brainstorm of getting a small hammer and tapping down on that part of the lid, then tightening the screws. Worked like a charm! I am now able to keep pressure. It got up to about 20psi for a minute but I have reduced heat and have it hovering around 17psi.

Hey no prob. Oysterguy. I try to keep it light too... I realize it's hard to convey emotion and tone in textual communique. Text, even with emoticons, still lacks full context and content. I do probably tend to go off a bit when my fairness radar bleeps. Call it healthy paranoia. Too much of the stuff can cripple you, but a little bit can keep you out of trouble. FWIW I never felt insulted in any personal way.

Well after some delays I finally got some jars inoculated and in the incubator set-up. Hopefully I can borrow my friend's digital camera and get some pics of the progress. Just a note... If you've read the TEKs on making a glove-box out of a Sterlite container, be warned: They aren't kidding about the stuff wanting to crack when you're cutting it. The hair-dryer idea to soften the plastic first seems to be on-mark. You'd be best not to try it at room tempurature, and save yourself frustration.
I have had problems getting the Long Grain Brown Rice to cook up to where it's shakeable. Pre-soaking didn't help, it actually made it worse. The jars came out with a solid chunk that would not budge. I ate the contents of all but three of those jars. Mmm... Brown Rice & Hot Sauce isn't too bad, really. I did get one jar that is shakeable by pre-soaking and adding way less water before pressure cooking. Interestingly, the very bottom (where the added water was) make another solid mass, but the rest of it remained fairly dry and shakeable. More experimentation is needed here.
I spent the weekend at a friend's house, but came back today (um, yesterday now, doh!) and made some progress. I went back to the MMGG style recipie of 1 part BRF, 1 part H2O, 2 parts Vermiculite. I did the traditional cap with dry vermiculite at the top 1/2 inch and cooked 'em up. I did my innoculations under my makeshift glove-box and put them in the incubator about 8-something last evening. 6 jars are the MMGG recipie, 3 are the solid LGBR masses, and one is the LGBR jar I can actually shake ('cept for the smaller mass at the bottom, which I did manage to break loose and chunk with vigorous shaking). We'll see how each progresses. So far I have only used the Gulf Coast strain, so they all start with the same syringe and same incubation temp & time.
Tomorrow or the next day I should get time to cook up a few more jars. I have about 5cc left of the Gulf Coast syringe, so I think I'll try a couple variations of the LGBR. I'll try another pre-soak but add no water to see if the whole jar is shaky. I'll also try pre-cooking some of the rice. For grins, if I have enough rice left, I'll also try the MMGG recipie substituting LGBR for BRF (in other words, dry LGBR (1p), H2O (1p), Vermiculite (2p). That should give me 4 or 5 variety jars to use up the rest of my Gulf Coast syringe on.
Should be fun! Mojo

A tip on getting shakeable jars.. Especially since you have a PC is try using Wild Bird Seed.. I just simmer the stuff for 1/2 hour, PC @ 15-17 PSI for 1 hour, and when cool, it is fairly easy to break up the seed mass.. Plus if you are spawning straight from your grain, WBS gives better potency..

Wild Bird Seed (WBS) as shakeable medium [Re: Kalix]

Thanks Kalix. I think I might just do that. Any old bird seed mix will do or anything I should be looking for?
Yes, I am going to use the grain medium as my spawn. Jar to casing. Have not decided on how best to case... may just case some right in the jars, or may get a bunch of those little disposable gladlock plastic food storage things.
Oh yeah... greater potency is always a good thing, no?
Peace, Mojo
