The Search for Truth
    #24778870 -

Hello community,

I wrote a piece expanding on Terence McKenna's ideas of science and language called "The Search for Truth" ( www.glenwillson.com ). I would greatly appreciate it if you had the time to check it out!! It can be read in fifteen minutes. I cover topics like:

- Buddhism
- New Atheism
- Mythology and Religion
- Transcendence
- Science
- Psychedelics
- Language

Thank you very much,

Glen

Truth alone Is, that's why you can't find it. The fish doesn't know the water it swims in.

Experience is biased and not worth looking at, same with philosophy, especially Pyrrhonism.

I know that science began as philosophy but it has grown into something else

Also I never claimed to be a Pyrrhonist but I don’t see what the “I” has to do with that

yes, and it makes no ascent, right? so would a someone pursuing the understanding in pyrrhonism claim to be an "I", is there an "I" to identify, IN ACTUALITY? in truth?

then why do you bother...oh right, because you're confused.

Can you expand on this?

Quote:
"Well established neuroscientists like Joseph LeDoux and Antonio Damasio, as well as author David Brooks, provide evidence that we are predominantly irrational creatures. We are animals in which reasoning is anchored in our biology. These researchers place emotion before reason."

One thing about militant-atheism as it is put is that I don't think people like Richard Dawkins want to soften their vocabulary to attract the laymen, this likely being due to his standing in an academic and professional circle. As I see it he and such others may be too eloquent for the general public, or those who haven't followed such a scientific interest or understanding. I mean something like meiosis isn't going to be understood by most people but in scientific circles it's pretty well understood and these differences I think are what lead to the thoughts that 'militant-atheists' are pious.

And I don't think people like Stalin did what they did in the name of atheism so I don't agree with there being an unprecedented magnitude of death caused in the name of atheism.

Whatever we want to call the self I don't think it's a static or unchanging thing but a process.

As for stress management,
How would you suggest this stimulation can occur?
Quote:
'Vagus nerve stimulation and proprioceptive input may both be useful'

Things live within it but this makes no sense, at least not to me.
Quote:
"One of the greatest, most touching realizations of psychedelics common amongst spokespeople and authors is that the universe is living."

Quote:
"He said, “To hope that science will answer all questions is to want to shrink the human spirit, clip its wings, rob its multifaceted existence.”

I think that is to hope to ground it, a hope that there is a way to sew together both aspects of eastern and western philosophy with scientific integrity.

For my take on scientism I think facts are the only way forward, and it is mystery and curiosity that brings our foot forward in the search of those facts, and how we come across those facts is with philosophical inquiry and scientific experimentation, not either or.

Quote:
"On authentic feeling: "Culture replaces authentic feeling with words."

I strongly disagree that naming a bird a bird takes away from or collapses the mystery of it when there are a plethora of other mysteries surrounding it that include the colours of its plumage, the variety of its mating displays and nesting displays, its vast array of calls, dietary specifications, hunting strategies, social interactions, parental care and so on.

I don't think language is what raised us above the brutes of the wild living, but that it was a result of our evolution into civilised beings that did not strictly adhere to the whim of our intuitive feelings. That what I think we did is that we overcame the necessity to immeditely answer the fight or flight response.
