I think shrooms on deck is correct.
So they are inedible? I see they are sold in England. Bummer, they smell nice. The black must be the gasterothecium. They do have spore like resemblance I suppose.

So the black would be the spores and when it dries up and shrivel's and gets stepped on you get the puff of spores. Awesome!

From what I have read, puffballs with black interiors are poisonous. You probably don't want to eat this one.
