ID Request-Truffles, puffball or other?
    #8929325 -

Wondering if these are edible truffles or some other orblike puffball.  Something thought they were good as you can see from the rodent sized pile of middlins in the background of the first photo.  One guy I met on the trail said he didn't think they were truffles because of their smell.  I thought they had a pleasant sweet earthy aroma but I guess truffles are supposed to be more dank. Any insight appreciated.

Habitat: found in forest of doug fir, pacific silver fir and other subalpine mixed conifers. Elevation about 3500 feet. In woody debris and sometimes sticking out from exposed roots of trees.  mostly growing singularly but a couple small clusters were found.

Gills: No gills. inside was grey/brown and seemed spongy

Stem: no stem. There did seem to be a rhizome coming off the base of the ones found in duff. the ones in the roots were surrounded by mycelium but still attached at the base.

Cap: no cap. it seemed to split with age and turn white then yellow in those areas. General color seemed to be a pinkish white on the outside. General texture of mushroom was soft with a little bit of give when squeezed.

Spore print color: did not perform spore print. but interior seems spongy and darker in color than the exterior.

Bruising: No color change was observed.

Location: Picked on west side of Mt. Adams in Washington, USA

rodents are the number one spore distributor of spore of mushrooms that grow underground, squirrels are one of the most commond rodents , but also wild pig, deers, cow some farmers have told me that , wasp, etc.

those are not truffle ,  not even  false truffle but rizopogon sp, they grow  symbiotic with douglas fir and pines, those can be use to seed many trees  is the most commond micorrisic mushrooms use in your area . are you in reforested lands ?..

I was hunting in forests that were probably logged at one point.  Some large trees but not old growth.  Most of Oregon and Washington has been logged already. It is national forest now so there is not present logging but the only reason many of the roads and campgrounds exist is because of the commercial interest in the trees.

yeah sometimes this mushrooms is used to much in reforestation program since they want to grow fast  trees not caring for the mycodiversity , but they also lost the oportunity to improve the subproducts, and is true that sometimes is takes so much the rozosfera  of the trees and  no other muchrooms can colonize the root , so sometimes is boring to find many of only a sigle species.
