Perlite question for SGFC

Hey everyone,

So i have a couple cakes in my SGFC and about 3.5 inches of perlite that i strained. I was wondering how long it will stay damp or when i should re-hydrate it and how to re-hydrate if needed.

All help and suggestions are appreciated. thanks.

Its good for at least a couple months but you may want to wash it at the one month mark just because.

Soak it in a 10% bleach solution then rinse till you no longer smell bleach, strain and your good

Your perlite stays moist for three months in a SGFC?

Mine's done in about a week. 

If I waited 3 months to freshen up the perlite it would be completely covered in green algae.

Inbetwen flushes, while cakes are dunking,  I wipe the FC down with bleach,  take the perlite out and rinse it under hot water for a few minutes,  put it back in, add a splash of hydrogen peroxide, and I'm good for another week or two MAX.

If it dries out you can always just mist the perlite directly until water starts dripping out the holes in the bottom.

Now I just wanted to make sure that we are still all able to keep everything moist with using something like blumat or a mason jar with an air pump in a water solution right?

that's the idea youtube cultivators and noobs alike come up with.
don't do it.

perlite is a rock and bleach smells like shit, I would never bleach perlite. When I was new and did SGFC grows I would just put the whole SGFC in my shower and re-wet the perlite about every 7-14 days.

the air in your house is astronomically dirty to begin with so bleaching perlite is pretty useless. every breath of air you breathe in has 100s if not 1000s of mold spores. it's part of everyday normal air. this everyday normal air doesn't contaminate your grows we only put fully colonized cakes/substrates into open air conditions.

So then perlite with water and hydrogen peroxide ok? And I know perlite is for giving the moisture, that's what it's for, I mean using the blumat drip to replenish the perlite without needing to replenish it by taking it out and wetting/straining then re adding everything.

My apologies, I'm new, but I am soaking up everything like a sponge, (maybe a slow sponge, but a sponge that is learning a lot).

just wet the perlite in the shower. its in the chamber. let it drain for 30min. load with cakes. repeat.

i never cleaned perlite. ever. i must of used the same batch for months and months.

hydrogen peroxide has absolutely NO place in growing mushrooms.
you may hear it's useful for fighting cobweb. but if you have cobweb you fucked up so royally you need to start over.

there's no reason to even own a bottle of peroxide

It's not even that good for cuts and scrapes as it damages your healthy skin tissues delaying healing.

Even with the old thread, i will say the purpose of the perlite is to keep the cakes from drying out as they are in open air.

To answer the question as to why hydrogen peroxide, somewhere on youtube probably I think someone mentioned to use it in a jar with water with an air pump to rehydrate everything, seemed like he knew what he was talking about, the video showed shrooms growing just fine and dandy without any trouble or so it seemed.

Hydrogen peroxide is an very outdated practice, right next to drip shields and incubators.

Its not necessary. Its no longer needed for proper grows.

Humidity does matter but u dont need a meter to tell u that its moist or dry or your FC.

Besides, humidity fluxes during the day in a SGFC which mycelium likes. U can tell if your FC is moist by looking inside or by touching the perlite and seeing how wet or dry it is.
