newbie perlite question

I checked out 5 different FAQs about fruiting chambers, and all of them recommend perlite, but it never says whether or not you have to sterilize it. One said just to run water over the perlite through a strainer, then set the cakes directly on the perlite. Couldnt perlite be harboring contams?

perlite has no nutritous value so contams have nothing to grow on, it is only used to retain humidity

Unlikely, but if you want to be careful just add a splash of h2o2 to the water.
