The French in the Americas
    #24229663 -

Did immigrants from France ever have any signifigant immigration to America? Their are a lot of French-Canadians in the northeast. Of course Louisiana had a strong French influence. I mean, did any large amount of French immigrate to the US,especially from the 1840s to the 1920s and where did they go?

The Louisiana purchase (1803) was land that was largely unsettled by whites.

Sir Alexander MacKenzie only had found a land route to the Pacific 10 years prior in 1793. The transcontinental railway was still 70 years away from being built, and Indian populations were still very hostile west of the Mississippi river.

I think Florida and the Gulf Texas had some pretty significant French populations in their time.

Ken Burn's The Wild West is on Netflix and I'm about half way through it right now.

Well, this sort of predates your time-frame,
but the French-Canadians in the northeast, notably Maine
trace back to Acadia
and the Cajuns in Louisiana trace back to it as well

On a differing note,
if you are interested in the expanse of the French into North America
the history of Québec is worth looking into
as in the earlier days
the French sided very closely with the First Nations tribes
and fought against the British and early American citizens
including a young George Washington

It could also potentially be said that the English crackdown on the French in Québec
and the First Nations across Canada,
may also hold some ties to the French willingness to recognize the First Nations 'as brothers'
and intermarry with them, leading rise to a group known as the Métis
who have been considered to be additionally disenfranchised over the course of Canadian history
due to being labeled both as Indians
and not being a fully defined tribe in the traditional sense,
inhibiting access to Treaty Rights

but may also be simply symptomatic of the British approaches to bringing their culture to the Empire

My apologies for less familiarity with US history aside from where there are cross overs

The French laded in QUebec. THe english landed too. There was a war. The English sent reinforcement, the french didn't. The Acadians (French people) were moved to Louisiana for some reason.

Quote:
Between 1819 and 1870, 245,812 French immigrants arrived in the United States. Their numbers steadily rose—from 8,868 during the 1820’s to 45,575 during the 1830’s. The next two decades witnessed further increases of French immigrants: 77,262 during the 1840’s and 76,358 during the 1850’s. The increased numbers of French immigrants during each of those decades reflect the disorders caused by political revolutions in France in 1830, 1848, and 1852.

During the 1860’s, the decade in which the U.S. Civil War was fought, the number of new French immigrants declined to 37,749. The 1870 U.S. Census counted 115,260 U.S. residents born in France, with the largest numbers in New York, Ohio, Louisiana, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. The loss of the French province of Alsace-Lorraine to Germany in 1871 increased the number of French Alsatians, particularly French Jews, who went to the United States. Nevertheless, the 1880 U.S. Census saw a decline in the number of French-born residents of the United States to 104,143. By this time, California had replaced Ohio among the five states with the most French residents.

The 1900 census showed a further decline in the size the French-born population, whose numbers had dropped to 102,535. The largest communities were in New York, Colorado, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Louisiana. Between 1875 and 1914, France’s politics and national economy was stabilizing, and most French emigrants chose to see economic opportunities in French colonies in North Africa and Southeast Asia.

Protestants from France (aka Hugenots) settled in South Carolina early in the colony's history.

They French once had Ohio.  There was a war.  French lost I guess.

Supposedly my mom's dad's side were some of the first whites in Ohio.  They were French and I think they drank a lot.  Never will know though.

Ohio really should be part of Canada.  Now there are too many Germans and Italians.  I say Ohio succeeds.
