Why would one find a hobby, something that is generally pursued to bring about enjoyment or satisfaction, to be embarrassing? If engaging in a particular activity generates a fear of public exposure/discovery or feelings of malcontent or discomfort; however, one finds themself uncontrollably compelled to repetition of said damaging behavior--then the action is more accurately described as an unhealthy and/or destructive obssive-compulsion opposed to a hobby.
Hobbies are activities of great personal interest which require skill and are typically oriented toward the goal of mastery (or at the very least measurable improvement within a given time frame) which is gained through study, practice, variation, improvisation, collusion, cooperation, communication and repetition (all of which are in direct contrast to behaviors associated with feelings of embarassment and are nearly impossible to harness under the shroud of complete and total secrecy).
Hobbies are usually pursued with passion, sometimes to the level of reckless abandonment and disregard. They are commonly attributed with having the ability to promote relaxation, focus and self discovery/betterment also credied with positive feelings of accomplishment, increases in self worth, confidence, spirituality, focus, enlightenment and addition of value.
Embarrassment is a negative, psychologically harmful emotion caused by public acquisition of hidden (or private) and personal information that one has deemed as sensitive and/or inappropriate with respect to one's (often) secret behavior, thought/opinion or desire which one views as abnormal, shameful, disgusting or otherwise socially unnacptable due to either one's manifestation of an irrational insecurity or a rationally held fear of discovery due to the socially unacceptable, or intolerable, innapropriate, illegal, illogical, unpopular, misguided, derranged, and perversed nature of the personal information one strives to protect from others.
Several possible explanations for a hobbyist to feel embarrased of their hobby may be simple immaturity, lack of self confidence, social anxiety disorder, closet (or latent) homosexuality, personal inacceptance or self loathing, depression or bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other mental illness, drug induced psychosis with hallucinations and/or paranoia, fear of failure, gender identity role confusion, sexual deviance and/or perversion, psycho/sociology pathy, narcotic/drug addiction and/or withdrawal, PTSD, etc... you get the idea.
My general and overall point is that the overwelming majority of people enjoy, love, and are proud of their hobbies, interests, occupations, and extracurricular activities; more often than not people will jump at any opportunity to share or show off their unique knowledge, skills and abilities. It may be assumed with near certainty that hobbyists demonstrate, appreciate, exude, and exemplify: diversity, respect, pride, support, encouragement, and honor others and their individual and personal level of mastery in subject matter expertise and related activities and feats which they have dedicated and sacrificed enormous amounts of time, study and work that they may possess, sharpen and master knowledge, skills and abilities to share with the world.
Except in circumstance where an underlying issue is responsible for deviation from the norm, talented hobbyists selflessly leap at the opportunity to share their hard earned gifts with the rest of us; waivering, pausing, ceasing or faltering for only legitimately debilitating and medically justifiable reasons.
No, I do not believe for one moment that any human on earth is genuinely embarassed by one of their hobbys, but that the precise opposite is true.
I like to write overly wordy, pedantic, pontificative, and nonsensical replies to random posts that mildly interest my attention defect afflicted intelect.
Ooh shiney....
