Not intended to trigger the conspiracy people but...

I tend to get tooth cavities, more than I care for. I did some research and other than changing certain food habits out pops the recommendation, based on clinical evidence, that adults in that category would be recommended to receive 2-4 fluoride treatments a year at the dentist's office. Just two of those, studies shown, reduce cavity incidence with 28% on average, with four, obviously more.

Thank you, I'll take four of those please. I'm not overly concerned with the fluoride, from a chemistry background. Lead, Hydrogen Fluoride and Mercury concern me, dental fluoride, if applied sanely, is an acceptable risk no matter how much the internet rumor mill harps that fluorine is the worst element north of Plutonium on the periodic table.

Well, no. I took a glance at my dentist's price list and since a fluoride treatment at the bare minimum involves a consultation and all the blabla, four of those would easily set me back 200 bucks a year, for what essentially boils down to exposing my teeth to a Sodium Fluoride solution four times a year.

Onto the Internet, directly to the dentristry supply stores (that wont supply to non dentists), find what stuff they use, then pull the prescribers information etc etc to get the exact ingredients lists.

Crunching some more research out comes the recommendation that teeth need to be exposed to a pH neutral solution of 2% sodium fluoride (9,000ppm F-) for four minutes, and nothing else, to constitute a clinically effective fluoride treatment.

No need for gel, foam, buffers, trays, in fact there are fluoride treatments out there that make you slosh half an ounce of 2% NaF + flavor through your mouth for 0.5-1min, then spit and repeat with a new half ounce for the same duration, spit, dont eat/drink/smoke/rinse for 30 minutes and bam, you are golden.

Or rather the dentist is golden because that "treatment" you could be billed 50 bucks for.

50 bucks! For what boils down to a grand total of an ounce of distilled water containing 2% NaF, in two portions rinsed through the mouth and spat out.

Well, no.

I got me some 99,9% pure analytical grade Sodium Fluoride, i could hit the supermarket for some demineralized water and perhaps half a Mentos to dissolve in that ounce for flavor, add 2% NaF, set it out in 2 cups by my sink and strictly follow the protocol as if it were NUPRO or IONITE-R.

Rinse, spit, rinse, spit, wait - 50 bucks saved in The Amazing 50 Cent Professional Fluoride Treatment.







I'm getting another dentist by the way. Having researched the ins and outs of cavities and modern dentistry options I'm upset with the guy. He just sat by, filling my cavities and his wallet without offering me any of the preventive interventions that are possible, because it would mean less profit for him to, basically, slow the decay of my teeth. If I had not relied on him and instead had done my Internet homework I would have a bunch less fillings in my mouth and a bunch more filling in my wallet. The fucker didnt even prescribe me a prescription strength fluoride toothpaste. Pick your dentist with care guys!

but seriously, during my first yukon winter i started having cavities form for the first time ever. no major changes had occurred, not in diet or brushing habits, so i was confused.

i like my teeth, so i did some research and found a lot of various sources describing the importance of vitamin d for tooth health; and i was in the middle of a dark northern winter, probably my lowest ever levels of vitamin d ever

over a couple months i added a process of coconut oil pulling, salt water rinse, and vitamin d supplements to my brushing regimen and i shit you not the cavities disappeared

two years later and i'm still cavity free :thumbup:

Actually, remineralisation is a thing. There is calcium and phosphate in your saliva and the teeth pull these from your saliva and repair themselves. You only get cavities if your teeth demineralize faster than they remineralize.
Fluoride helps that process.

Its horrible stuff to ingest in quantity but for topical exposure to the teeth its the tits.

Nobody's teeth will age the same. Some people's teeth are genetically strong and will not get cavities even when neglected. Some people's teeth will wear away from the mere gentle brushing of teeth.

Better Living Through Chemistry was a DuPont slogan in the 1960s that the hippies found too groovy to pass on with all the LSD and MDA they took. Chemistry was held in higher regard back then.

I have been on TOTSE, laughing my ass off and reading the deathtrap advice through the fingers of my facepalm, but I never spent any time on the forums there.

I figured The Temple Of The Screaming Electron would be around forever, I was wrong. RIP TOTSE.

First off, shivas.wisdom - I see what you did there.  +1 for you.

Secondly, also shivas.wisdom - thanks for post #2.  I have a friend who has a 7 year old kid who is already having bad cavity problems.  The kid is also lactose intolerant.  Aside from vitamins, our main source of vitamin D is through dairy products.  I would like to see if the kid's cavity problem diminishes if they start taking a multivitamin with vitamin D.  I will suggest this to my friend.  And if it works, well then kudos to you for helping a child that you don't even know.  I love how the wheel goes round and round and people are able to help each other without even knowing each other. 

Also, trees, I have always thought there was something involving genetics when it comes to tooth health.  I have two brothers, and none of the three of us have ever had cavities, and I know one of my bros neglects the shit out of his teeth.  My father had his first cavity at age 54, yet my mother, who is OCD about brushing/flossing/mouthwash, has had cavities throughout her life.  She also loves sweets, which none of us do, but still, she takes care of her teeth crazily.

Interesting stuff.  So much to ponder...
