Math Problem...there is only one number!!!
    #2403828 -

Assume that A = B

1.  A*A = B * A

Distributive

2.  A^2 - B^2 = BA - B^2

Subtract B^2 from both sides

3.  (A + B)(A - B) = B(A - B)

Factor

4.  ((A + B)(A - B))/(A - B) = (B(A - B))/(A -B)

Divide both sides by (A - B)

5.  A + B = B

A = B so A + B = 2B

6.  2B = B

7.  2 = 1

Divide both sides by B

8.  1 = 0

Subtract one from both sides.

1 = 0,  all numbers equal zero.

10 points for someone who tells me what is wrong here.  :lol: :lol:

The first step is actually the substitution property, but that doesn't really make a difference. I assume the error comes from when you divide by (A-B). When you divide by variables (which cancels out the term), you lose a solution to the problem. This also happens when you divide 2B = B by B. The solution to this equation is only 0.

Also, when you have denominators, you have to make sure you don't get 0 on the bottom, which is exactly what you're doing when you divide by (A-B), because A-A = 0. Dividing by 0 is undefined. I'm not a mathematician, so somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

My geometry teacher gave us this freshman year. I vaguely remember it, but after scanning it, since A = B, it'd be 1 minus 1, AKA 0. You can't divide by zero, otherwise all numbers would be equal to zero.

Yeah, MMerletto gets the full ten points, but I will still give you five.

Without looking at the rest of the thread...

Your error is in step 4. You cannot divide by 0, and since A = B the term (A - B) equals 0, thus you cannot divide by (A - B).

What are these points? Can I redeem them for stuffed animals or something?

Next time you make a purchase, and they ask "Cash, Check, or Credit Card," say "Actually, I was going to use SpecialEd points, I will pay the difference in cash."

Trendal, I will give you five as well.

This is interesting if you look at it from another point of view. That it is another proof of the specific kind of maths, because if we were to divide by (A-B) then one of it's basic principles would be violated and thus all numbers would equal zero which is unacceptable from this specific kind of maths. Of course the fact that we can not divide by 0 is one of the basic principles and doesn't need proof, but so to speak...
