Oyster Grow Log - LC/agar to straw pellet substrate, open air (description of the tek I used)
    #23883660 - 12/01/16 04:53 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Hey guys,

some time ago I started my first oyster grow. The storehouse of a mushroom cultivation online shop is in my city so I am able to get mushroom stuff quite cheap (no shipping costs) and I decided to buy a Myc Syringe, its just a LI sucked into a syringe, but you also can do this tek with agar, which I also done.

Eventhough the guy who works there is a academic mycologists with a laboratory I wasn't sure if his myc syringe (liquid culture) is contamininant free, so I inoculated agar plates first and do one transfer at least. One was absoluetly enough, because all plates I inoced were fine.

8th of November 2016

After the the myc plate was colonized, I inoculated a rye jar with an agar wedge, let it colonize and shook it after 30% colonization and then again after 60% colonization. It recovered perfectly after 36 hours. Oyster myc is very fast in growing.

13th of November 2016

The jar could be a bit bacterial, but I think it was fine.

Then I took the jar (and one another), gave it a good smell and spawned it to the substrate.

Here are my ingredients of the substrate:

Strawpellets - 650g
Water - 1900g
Gypsum - 25g
Lime - 10 g

1. Just put everything into a bucket and pour the boiling water over it and close it with the lid. After 30 Minutes give the whole bucket a good shake, shake the hell out of it. Open the bucket lid a bit to let the pressure go out and then close it again. Let it rest for at least 4 hours and give it every hour a good shake and let the pressure go out.

2. After the bucket has cooled down, I've added the spawn after shaking the jar and giving it a smell (oyster smells a bit sweet, it's not bacterial). You should add between 330g to 370g of spawn, not more and not less for good colinization time.

Tip: To know the weight of your spawn, weigh the jar with lid and poly in it before filling it with rye and note the weight. When your spawn is ready, you just have to weigh the whole jar and subtract the weight of the empty jar. If you have less or more than 330-370g of spawn, adjust the weight of the substrate ingredients (rule of three!)

3. Shake the spawn-sub-mixture in the bucket as much as you can to spread the rye berries over the whole substrate

4. Then add the whole thing into tubular film. I used 30cm wide and 70cm long tubular film with a strenght of 100 µm (Material: LDPE). Just make a node on one side, add the spawn-sub-mix and close it on the other side, either with a node or with a food bag clip.

After you finished, just take a small needle or very small nail and make holes into the foil, as much holes as possible.

5. Now just wait about a week for the bale to colonize.

6. After some while, you will see that the myc has produced white knots everywhere. These will be the places where the fruits will grow.

7. Now take a sharp knife and cut slices/craks into the foil at the places where the white knots have build up.

8. Put your bale in fruiting conditions. I just put it in a slightly cooler room with good daylight and a lot of fresh air. No fruiting chamber, nothing. Just fruiting in open air.

9. After three days of resting, give your bale twice a day a slight mist of water and fan it a bit.

27th of November 2016

You will see fruits growing out of the slices you cut into the foil. Now it's time to take care that the bales don't dry out. Just give them mists of water as you see they are drying out. When you discover new places fruits are groing out, just cut slices into the foil there. If your slices are too small, the fruits will be squeezed, so make the holes bigger by adding more slices above and under the first slice.

30th of November 2016

As you can see, the mushrooms are getting bigger and bigger, I think tomorrow I will harvest the first fruits.

Today I'm going to start the next bale  Wish me luck!

Regards!

mate, really appreciate to hear that from you. I read your king oyster thread before and I must say: Wow! Really good job.

Do you have any hint or tipp for me how I could do better? Anything what I never should forget to do when growing oysters?

Thanks Al:thumbup:
You are doing absolutely great for open air growing, the only hint or tip I would have is to build a fruiting chamber next, you will just naturally get bigger more robust fruits.

yeah, I have a SGFC but I have cubes in it, so theres no space for my oyter bags. And bigger fruiting chambers I can't build because I only live in a small students appartement, actually my girlfriend is already killing me every time she's on visit, because there are either agar plates, oyster bags or cube monos she isn't allow to touch

I have no space for more. Did you mean to build a fruiting chamber like the SGFC for the oysters? Maybe I could bild one more and put it in the kitchen. Or do you mean a real fruiting chamber like a green house or the one you build?!

SGFC's dont give enough FAE for oysters, I wonder if you may have enough space for a mini greenhouse, they don't take up too much of a foot print.
I used this write up to build my first one

haha had to only see the picture to tell that it's impossible in my appartement

I maybe could finde a place on a shelf or on my closet for a 60qt tote but for a greenhouse this size it's impossible :P

So I have to go on with open air frutiing until I finish studies and move to another appartement.

But I think it's fine until then, I don't want to eat oysters every day anyway and my two bags will give me more oystern than I am able to eat

But thank you for the tipp, I bookmarked the thread and if I have some space, I'll build one.

What kind of edible mushrooms do you recommend to grow next time? Also ones that can be either grown in bags open air or at least in small trays in SGFCs or in mini monos?

Dude your doing great with the open air fruiting! You gotta work with what you have:shrug:

For other mushrooms I would say shiitaki would be good, I have seen a lot of grows with shiitaki blocks in tubs, Gr0wer has some killer pics of shiitaki blocks in tubs. And Reishi does excellent in tubs as well in monotub style.

A cake, a plant pot and water dish, a bag and mold resistant casing.

When pining occurs open the bag.

For oysters, right?

Since straw pellets+gypsum+lime don't have to be pasteurized, it is mold resistant, right?

This size will do any mushroom. If you can use it open air, then it's meant to be mold resistant.
I like to case in something gritty, the drainage allows me to water the substrate.

Compost, sand and compost, and so on. Guide here.

Sexy! Any tips on taking spore prints from these?

I plan on taking clone tissue from the grocery store to start, but would love to start from MS after my first grow!
