reishi grow log (sort of)

Remember, oh a month or so ago, Ralphster44 gave away 10 reishi cultures to 10 lucky growers? Well, I was wondering how everyone's getting on with them, as I haven't seen any posts about them. For myself, I've made a couple of new backup plates on peroxidated MEA, which the mycelium seems quite fond of. I've also inoculated a 2 pint jar of pasteurised hickory chips with agar wedges. At first nothing much happened, probably because of excess water, but a handful of dry perlite and a couple of shakes later all the chips are at least partially colonised. The mycelium is rather thin looking and doesn't seem keen to jump from chip to chip. I'm thinking that hickory is not the best substrate, but it's the only wood I can get, unfortunately. Maybe I'll try toilet rolls for laffs So what are the rest of the gang of ten up to?

The culture was perfect. I made some sawdust spawn and buried it outside in a shaded location. I'm also trying to fruit it indoors (17C and rh=80%) but no results to show so far. I also made wood dowels and going to inoculate some logs.

sooo, I now have this lovely big jar packed to the brim with colonised woodchips......
like so. Now what?s to do? I intend to fruit it straight from the jar, unless this is a bad idea? temp.? rH? and if anyone says "read GGMM" I?ll scream

Thanks Mycotek. Seems simple enough one thing confuses me though... "You could just poke some holes in the lid and wait till you see antler formations occuring and then you can pop the cap off and the antler will naturally conk out when it reaches the fresh air." woudn't that snap the "antlers" off? or is that the point? or did you mean wait until I see antler formations inside the lid, and not growing out through the holes?

Ah, well the chips are packed right up to the top of the jar, so I'd better do the foil thing. I assume there's no need for humidification until I remove the foil?

hickory chips for flavouring barbecue smoke, from Homebase. far too expensive really, but I don't know where to get hardwood chips. actually, I tried a little experiment to see if reishi would colonise spruce bark chips and it seems to be doing fine. Whether it would fruit or not is another thing....

a few weeks ago TrAnCyNuGz said: "I am thinking about ordering The Reishi Mushroom Patch from Fungi Perfecti, they are supossed to give you a non-narcotic spiritual feeling also" anyone know anything about reishi having any psychoactive properties? I read something along those lines somewhere elso, but I can't remember where or when

looks like "something's happening" already. the mycelium has crawled out of the jar and a bit down the side, and is getting a cauliflower-like appearance to it.

the cauliflower stuff is looking enthusiastic about _something_ anyway... is this what reishi primordia look like? I'll post a pic tomorrow, but feel free to answer today if you want to...

I just birthed a large coonised woodchip "sandcastle" that was sitting in a large flowerpot. The mycelium that was in contact with the pot sides was covered in a pale yellow transparent jelly like substance. I'm assuming that's just reishi metabolites?

I buried a colonized sawdust block in coverd it with some fresh sawdust. Here is what I found 2 months later:

Could it be reishi primordia?

I wonder when it?s going to stop growing down the side of the jar....
the fan like growth was from when the mycelium started to grow out over the surface of the plastic bag that was covering the jar. The jar has been in a large rubbermaid terrarium for the last week. Are these weird growths primordia? I don?t _think_ they are, but what do I know?

I think they are primordia, but they probably had to much humidity and CO2 at that stage. So, how is it going now? Do you have any antlers forming?

no antlers to speak of, I think I maybe upped the air exchange/lowered the CO2 too early. I do have what looks like some sort of primordia thang going on though... pics tomorrow, I'm off to bed now

urg, leave me alone, I'm not a well man also, my flash card reader isn't working looking at the jar 2 days later, it looks like I've got 3 of those funky stripy antlers growing , but for some reason, rather than sticking out like antlers should, they're slowly creeping down the side of the jar.... Looks a bit sinister if you ask me.

It's a lot easier to cultivate it outdoors. To make you feel better - most of my indoor sawdust jars became contaminated and I wish the rest looked like yours.

really? do you think it would grow outdoors in Scotland? I imagine the temp and rH would be too low, or would that just make it grow slower, rather than not at all?

I don't know. I already found a wild reishi in my area which is known as very dry during the summer. Maybe it wouldn't survive the winter in Scotland but I made that outdoor patch in the spring and I have mushrooms growing now, so you could try.

Here are some antlers that grew from a jar of wood dowels that I was too lazy to use on logs outside:

And a polypropylene bag with Tyvek filter that was opened after the sawdust was colonized. The surface is turning from pure white to reddish brown:

I will stack several bags and try to grow conks this time.
