P. Tasmaniana are native to Australia and New Zealand.

Psilocybe makarorae is indigenous and endemic.

Bagels find is P. tasmaniana.

P. Aucklandii is also endemic, I presume. I for one appreciate the contribution to the thread, and I think any Psilocybe that grows in NZ is fair game! I agree that the season (and by corollary this thread) is almost over, but if you're able to find Psilocybe over the summer, I doubt anybody would resent you for posting them.

The biostatus of Psilocybe aucklandiae unknown, it is obviously present here but it's origin is uncertain.

This is cool to see the season lasting so long in other places!
New to posting here.
Im from southland and theres a few places I know of locally that are a flourish at the peak of the season, Ive only ever seen P.Subs at the spots but still, a flourish could be an understatement. Next season, ill be more proactiv about taking pictures to post here. Im not sure if id be exagerating on the amount I have found by my wording so hopefully next year Ill be able to show everyone here just how much grows there. I think I pulled a couple of shopping bags full, my friend as well. And I love seeing the big hauls some people find on here.
Im pretty sure were finished up down here. All of the regular fields are bone dry. Although libs down here are gone quite quickly once one person is seen bending down looking for their "keys". But the sub spots are definitely done for the season. I went away to Wellington for a few months in June, and the forest floor then was still dripping with subs, so id have a guess, that in the deep south we finish up around late July, early August depending on the weather of course.
But I love reminising over the season in the off season and this past one was the first Id had actually felt a full trip, last years was quite midly and exciting but I couldnt dind anymore until i done my research the next year. But it was beyond words.
Does swim have something else they do in the off season? Lol, I often flip it up if I can, but with the amounts I found Im sure I can stock it away for the rest of the year for the odd occassions.
Whats the best way for storage? When I made a tea I used the nutri ninja once they were dried lol. I thought I could do that and vaccum seal the rest in individual bags or something?
Now im ranting.
Anyway, if others are all dried up for the year, im with you on another exciting season!

I dry, grind to powder and put the powder into capsules. Put the capsules in an airtight jar with some desiccant and store in a cool dark place.

Of course !
My comment/observation was quick and inaccurate, where I was coming from was the season for 'normal' endemic (Kiwi) psilocybes is to all intents and purposes, over. So should I post photos of an introduced mushroom, when all year round it is possible to find them.

Thank you Inski for allowing me to contemplate the error of my ways in making an off the cuff, sweeping, erroneous statement. I forgive myself....  :heart:

Yes post them. Mushrooms are introduced world wide. Speculation about all the different Psilocybe species is the name of the game. Your mushrooms are interesting because of their rarity in N.Z. They are interesting where they are commonly found in USA as well.  The name of the thread says it all.

Enjoy your posts.:cool: Want to see more pics. Year round pics would be great since there will be more documentation of a rare species in NZ.

That's really interesting. This might not be the best place to ask, but how does one generally determine the original country/area a mushroom is endemic to? Some sort of genetic analysis?

It still feels like spring here and it's possible that you might find P. alutacea and  Panaeolus cinctulus. There are others that you might be lucky enough to find too :wink:

I think he is referring to the massive earthquake we have had. Two people on the South Island died, and there has been substantial damage in a number of towns and in Wellington city (our capital which, we live close to).

Our office was trashed, and we lost equipment. It is really strange how earthquakes work ; some places destroyed while next door no damage. The experts tell us 98% chance of another as strong as the first one, in the next month. We are staying away from our office as much as possible for a while.
