Try your local thrift stores. I have picked up several American Harvest food dehydrators. They are the $69.00 model.....I get them for $3.99 to $7.99 and they look brand new. They probably were never used.
Yes the season is coming soon! I'm getting pretty excited! I'm going to get some liberty caps and try to grow them indoors this year. Not many have done this.....so I'm looking forward to the challenge!
good luck hunting!

If you read my field guiide at http://mjshroomer.yage.net/species.htm
I have been drying wild edible mushrooms for thirty years and never had need of a dehydrator to dry them.
Of course it took me a few yers to get it right bu8t there is no need unless yuoiu are planning to dry fruit.
or beef jerky?

No need for a food dehydrator man... Just go get yourself a one pound box of DampRid from home depot. Lay that in the bottome of a sealable container, then put a layer of mesh to suspend the mushrooms over the pelets. It gets them bone dry in about 2 days, depending on how many you are trying to dry. Always worked like a charm for me.

hey mesh can rust causing oxifdation from damp shrooms to adhere to the mushrooms with xidation dust.

You can ask me and OJ about this, we know bellingham quiet well, well enough to say that without a doubt no psilocybes grow in bham....of course that would be an outright lie. muwahahah reading between the lines of the slander i just presented you could draw the conclusion that psilos do indeed grow in bellingham.

Well, I have done two individual huts recently this season. I did one that yielded nothing (in a wetland no less!!!). Then this morning, I did my second and came back with several dozen large mushrooms....no ID on them yet, and I don't intend to eat them, but it gave me practice in my method of recording. Anyway, I'm not well versed in the scientific identifications, but I'm good at finding them, I'm good at cataloguing them, and I don't mind getting my hands dirty It'd be cool to have a friend to go find them with, especially another person who is about as new as I am to the art!

Why do you need food dehydrators? Just use rail-gun's epsom salts tek but keep this fat tek a secret because it kicks ass and once everyone knows you wont be special. Send the guy a message and say thanks because he really has put out a waaay coool idea.

Its no secret, popular acually.
Dehydrators are more simple and fast. And IME, have little if no noticable effects to potency.

I have dried lots of mushrooms in my day and have never used anything but regular airflow. Just lay the mushroom out on a cookie sheet or waxed paper not letting the fruitbodies touch and you will be goood to go and dry in just a few days. WHy makes things more complicated than they should be?

Not complicated at all. If you can pick up a dehydrator at a thrift store like alot of us, you can have dry mushrooms in 12h or so, less for psilocybes besides Cubensis. I picked up another dehydrator for 8 bucks brand new, no temp control but this never affected anything. Matter of preferance I guess.

(Sorry if this double posts, apparently my first try didnt work) Hey I'm over in Eastern WA and was just wondering what kind of luck people have had finding shrooms over here. I know its not going to be as good as over in Western WA, but if anyone has any tips or species to keep an eye out for I would really appreciate it!

URinsane,
People don't have much (if any) luck finding psilocybin fungi on this side of the mountains. Pan subbs might possibly grow here, but I've never seen any or heard of them being found. I grew up around Yakima and there are some choice edibles that grow in the area, but if all you're looking for is psilocybes, you're on the wrong side of the mountains . There are amanitas up in the woods though :P .

It depends on where you are in E WA-- there are areas in SE WA that produce more edible mushrooms than anywhere else in the State. In addition, the wavy caps are actually fairly common; don't know about the NE, however...

uhh, did you just say cyans are common in SE Washington JJBB? :P
Exactly what leads you to believe this is true, I couldn't help but notice your listed location was in the netherlands. The climate there (SE WA) is similar to where I'm at currently and I have a really hard time believing anything magic (at least psilocybes, a gym species or pan subbs wouldn't surprise me much) grew over there in any case. I've tried to grow azures outside here, and they wont grow well because by the time it gets humid/wet enough to support fruiting around mid-november, it's too cold and below freezing at night already. Fruits start but abort early on, there are pics on sporeworks' site of my attempt. I grew up in E. WA and I do have hunting experience with various psilocybes (west of the mountains) and edibles on the east, so I think I have a fairly good idea of what I'm talking about. They like a wet, mild climate, but E. WA is dry and cold (relative to W. WA) that time of year. Just because edibles are abundant there doesn't mean psilocybes are. I want to see pics of ringers or wavy caps picked in E. WA , until then, I'm not convinced :P . Show me the money!! I wouldn't mind being proved wrong, heh. Anyhoo, I'm moving back to seattle to start school next week, and getting anxious to do some hunting again. Good luck everyone!

DethHed: Fair enough-- you're quite right that the climate is no where near as good on the E. Side; I too grew up in E. WA. As far as 'common goes', there are certainly are actives in the Blue Mountains--I mean 'common' in the right place; By the right place, I mean, the lower foothills of the Umitilla. Cyans can be found if conditions are right--as you said, above freezing and wet. I've found psilos as late as November, but there does need to be a mild fall. Not sure of variety, but about the same size as cyans with longer stem, wavy margin, brown gills, purple print and staining blue. Forget about finding anything in the wheatland, or even growing anything there, but things are really different along the timber margin in the extreme south east.
The thing is, I've only found anything interesting in two places: 1) inside stream beds, under dense bushes and 2) under long wet grass along streams; I believe there is some insulating value that keeps conditions more humid and above freezing when surrounding temps are boarderline freezing. It's also important to be looking along streams that have a lot of alder or birch trees, seems to be key to finding anything. I've spent a fair amount of time around the Spokane area too, and never had any luck, but some report the random psilo find...I can't say I've had such luck.
Sorry I can't 'show you the money'--pretty tough to hunt in WA when living in Rotterdam. I don't think it would be worth anyone taking a trip for hunting purposes; if any of my old friends go into the Blues and send me pics I'll pass them along as proof of what I say.
If you're interested in just finding many different species, and id'ing them for fun, I can't think of a better place than the Blue Mts. Seriously, there were times we would go hunting and find as many as 25 different species in an afternoon, any time of year.
Good luck to everyone this year, and be careful!!!

hey washingtonians ..you might not want to give out your direct location so willingly...bad form!......there are private message channels for that.....but I was thinking why not be more proactive....has the thought occured to you that you could start colonizing any park by using Moes outdoor tek......just start making your own outdoor spots instead of wasting all your time hunting.....
when person A goes on a walk with the dog to check on his crumbled up PF cakes at site X...he could check on and watch over person B's crumbled up cakes just inches away....think of it as transplanting an alien civilization...(rabbit, horse, )shit with Moes outdoortek( literally) ...you can have a virtual dumping ground......
there could be another group working with another species on cardboard instead of Moes tech with cakes.....just a second cell of people....this is a hypothetical brainstorming for a fictional novel and not meant to be taken seriously ...ok
