I'm in the south and have got my first lot of pins coming through now.

Don't give me too much credit as they were found near my back garden (a lucky coincidence! :wink:).

I'll probably have to water them to help them out or else they'll probably abort as things are looking pretty dry still around here. I went for a walk around my neighborhood this morning but there's not much else beside the occasional grass-dwelling mushroom to be found. Still, the season appears to be underway at least which makes me happy!

I think we'll need another week or two in Wellington before we see anything, but I have spied the occasional inactive around the place. A few coprinellus micaceus, some amanita muscaria... not long to wait now though, not long at all... :dancingshroom:

Nice!! I'm in Queenstown on a little trip and have been finding a lot of fungi, tons of indicator species but not a single active. Leratiomyces, Galerina, Coprinopsis, Psathyrella, just about every wood dweller I can name but nothing on the Psilocybe side. It's been rainy and very cold but I just can't find a damned thing. Thought I was going to be in on some early action and it might be me making this thread but it looks like I'm going to end up waiting another month for Auckland to start now :rolleyes: you Southlanders keep me entertained til then will ya. Good luck to everyone this season :mushroom2:

That's unlucky, you'd think with all those other fungal genera that you would have stumbled upon at least one active patch. I've had more than a few hunts like that though!

Speaking of mushrooms, I went mountain biking through a local pine forest the other weekend and it was riddled with Amanita, they were literally everywhere as far as the eye could see, 1000+ easy. I don't even know why they were out as it hadn't even really rained. Shame they're not psychedelic or I would have been set for life!

Although we start earlier here in the South Island our season tends to be much shorter than the North so I always have to marvel at the massive hauls people pull from Auckland / Wellington right through the winter. As soon as the first frost comes down here it's almost game over here unfortunately.

This thread has made my day :smile: great to hear they are getting started.

I'm really looking forward to this season. Last season I felt very inexperienced at the start not having done sufficient research; after spending the rest of the year reading up everything I could get my hands on about what I can potentially find, I have a dozen new places I'm planning on visiting.

I managed to try cubensis last year quite a few times and was rather disappointed with them all round compared to our local species. The only way to describe it is like cubensis is "Dirty" acid, and Sub's/Lib's are "Clean".

On a side note, PM me for cube print info if your interested.

Funny you say that, about 2 weeks ago I had the same, went to one of the local tracks and couldn't find anything but amanita's everywhere even though there hadn't been rain in about a week. They must absorb the vast majority of their nutrients from the earth around it and not need good rain like our actives.

I'm in Canterbury too. I don't think any public spots are on yet based on my walk this morning, just too dry unfortunately. Mine will only make it to full-sized fruit bodies with some TLC I suspect.

Cool finds mate exactly the same day as mine :shocked: I dont get to see P. subs grow in my wood chips spot yet could see a few of Leratiomyces ceres but found them at the gully in Pine Forest, Go out hunting after a decent of rain wish you all good luck and include myself :tongue:

Congrats jbnz for getting the thread up in running!

I'm in Chch for a couple more days and the public spots I have checked out are very dry. There are a few indicator species but you sure need some rain, but not until I leave please :smile:  Happy hunting everyone.

No blue, white spores. I thought it was a Fly Agaric, but it doesn't seem red enough or spotty enough
