Any tabletop gamers here? (dungeons and dragons, GURPS, W/E)

Surely we've got a fair number of tabletoppers here. I still think the idea of a shroomery play by post campaign would be awesome. We had a short lived campaign a while back that fell apart, sure was neat while it lasted though.
Shoot, I might even be willing to DM, though this is not my preference. (I don't know of anybody that prefers to DM though )
I used to only do classic medieval D&D campaigns but lately my in-person group has been branching out into both modern times and space age. I always thought modern times would be lame-ish but this one tabletop book "Shadowrun" really had some nice flavor.

I've wanted to get into D&D but shits expensive. I've played many games of munchkin and settlers of katan. A game where you have to fuck everyone over , over a period of hours.

That's why I like GURPS, (generic universal roleplaying system) all you need to play are 3 six sided dice, a little creativity, and the .pdf rulebooks. (which can be torrented for free, same with D&D books.) The rules are simpler than D&D too...makes it easier for noobs to get into it. I only needed to skim through the GURPS rulebooks one time to get a real solid grasp of how it works.
Same for D&D, all you need is a 20 sided dice and some .pdf's. The rules aren't that complicated.
I've been wanting to get into other boardgames beside roleplaying games. Me and my friends played risk really competitively for a while but I haven't played much else in that vein.

After the summer I'm going to be DMing a game on roll20.net. I have one player so far, I've been DMing for 18 years in the same universe.
The hardest part about DnD, for a DM is getting the SAME 3-4 people at the table evey week. It's still just as hard to get everyone on the same WEBSITE to play every week. DnD doesnt start to get "good" unil there is realoized commitment between everyone.

My girlfriend is into it, but I get exhausted playing it after only a couple hours. I do enjoy reading the books and looking at the illustrations though

plus, games like D&D have a sort of stigma, but something tells me if people like your girl actually saw a group of people playing, they might be into it.
I don't think outsiders have much concept of how the game is played

D&D is one big circle jerk.

I used to run new world of darkness games for quite a few years. Also played a good amount of D&D from AD&D up through pathfinder. Haven't played any of 4th ed yet though.
My favorite by far has been Harnmaster. Although finding a group to play with has been difficult. With Larp more than filling my RP meter these days Harn is probably the only system I would go back to tabletop for.

used to be big into Warhammer 40k (Dark Angels and Eldar, motherfuckers!), and then Mordheim for the first year or two after it was released. Unfortunately, that stopped when i started working full time at 16. the good ole days before the good ole days of drugs!

For modern day RPG settings the best ever were the world of darkness setting - especially vampire the masquerade , werewolf the apocalypse and Mage the Ascension.
Amazing setting, amazing flavour , and especially with mage the Ascension - a gateway to something real.

ooh yeah, reading the wiki page for the ascension, liking it. I always wanted D&D magic to involve real world mysticism/stuff like that.

Never played a proper D&D game, always wanted to and several of my friends do it regularly. I have however played a shitload of Warhammer Fantasy and recently switched to Kings of War. The number of models I have sitting around is obscene
