Toxic Myths and Scientology
    #23264801 -

I am calling toxic myths belief systems that are determined to enslave those who get hooked into believing them. I think a GREAT example of this phenomenon is the failry young toxic myth of the Church of Scientology which all came about from the insane ideas of Ron L Hubbard, a science fiction and fantasy writer (errrm hint hint??) , he came up with the absurd system of belief which is now one of the richest most powerful cults, Scientology.

WHY are people so gullible they can get hooked into these toxic myths? What can we learn from this? This post has been inspired after me finding this video which I am currently watching. All about the father of the leader of scientology, and his book which exposes his som and the cult, and the harassment he is receiving because of this. So it is worthwhile watching

I think people just want to understand, and everyone loves a good story.

A lot of people also like the idea of an exclusive club where they think they know more than others.

I once picked up some equipment for work from a Scientology Church and the people i came across seemed lost. I even saw the most beautiful girl i've ever seen in my life, it was love at first sight. I wondered what led them there, what keeps them there, and the only thing i can come up with is they want to understand. They're lost and suffering like every soul on this planet and want to find answers that will bring them peace.

Really, when you get right down to it, all groups of people are for the most part evil.  I'll take exception to musical groups, but there has in fact been a lot of evil influence in the music industry so the group concept is more like a real orchestra where the group can come together and make more than an individual would.

great reply! wanna break it down, cause like I said I think this is an important inquiry which can expose the whole schebangle, because scientology is relatively a baby in comparison with other toxic myths, it is easier to see the history of its rise to power

'people like a good story'

I might read a book, watch a film, and really love the story, but this doesn't mean I want to sacrifice my life to it, and even willing to sign a 'billion year contract'! So I'm guessing you mean a 'story' that 'helps' them make sense of the questions: where am I from? Why am I here? Where am I going?
Hence a science fiction and fantasy storyteller can spin some story which hooks millions of gullible believers in it.

Yeah, and in this groups/cults you will have hierarchies where the top level claim to know more than the lower levels. That is what Freemasonry is supposed to be like according to the higher initiates of that cult and toxic myth,  like Albert Pike:

Quote:
"Masonry, like all the Religions, all the Mysteries, Hermeticism and Alchemy, conceals its secrets from all except the Adepts and Sages, or the Elect, and uses false explanations and misinterpretations of its symbols to mislead those who deserve only to be misled; to conceal the Truth, which it calls Light, [AND WHO IS THE PURVEYER OF THIS “TRUTH”? [Morals and Dogma, Albert Pike PAGE 321!] from them, and to draw them away from it. Truth is not for those who are unworthy or unable to receive it, or would pervert it. So God Himself incapacitates many men, by colorblindness, to distinguish colors, and leads the masses away from the highest Truth, giving them the power to attain only so much of it as it is profitable to them to know. Every age has had a religion suited to its capacity. [READ PAGE 819.ibid]

it is great you could see that. Not for them, but that you have that insight to see through their hypnosis!
I don't though think it is naturally inherent that people should be 'lost and suffering', but rather that the shit we are in is more a situation of cults within cults within cults etc. IE, so you escape scientology, but then your in the cult that is the materialist cult which is also a toxic myth. Kind of like out of the frying pan into the fire.

I find it ironic that people reject traditional religions on the basis that they are irrational (I agree) only to swallow a new religion with an equally crazy basis. People tend towards superstition. My father is an intelligent man, prone to examine things logically until religion comes up and then logic goes out the door. Most religious people strike me this way. In the absence of supernatural baloney people may still foster irrational beliefs about the world, some pathway to perfection and/or a narrative that avoids mortality such as the transference of our consciousness to a computer so we can live forever. Scientology is a certain special kind of stupid since it's founder is only recently dead and is known to be a fictional writer who made up the religion and is considered a charlatan by his own son.

yeah, that is what Terrence McKenna suggested we would be able to do. So he was also promoting insane beliefs too, right?

And like you see, it is KNOWN that the very founder of Scientology was a science fiction writer, and writer of fantasy, and yet STILL believers flock to it, and sign billion year contracts ffks sake!!! And very rich people like Tom Cruise, and other celebs also fall into this cult

this is all so utterly insane isn't it??:crazy2: it just beggers belief!

cannot understand the lack of interest, but it seems pretty dead, so i will have to explore this with myself then:

So IF it is so, that people get sucked into these absurd stories so much so they sacrifice their whole lives and 'future lives' to them (eg the 'billion years contract' scientologist cult members choose to sign) then what does this mean. Does it m,ean ALL stories are wrong? is there a state of being that is without a story, or is it that the stories we CHOOSE are important?

I have been watching this TV documentary about the Nzis and the occult, and they too had this weird story about a 'black sun' and 'hollow earth' and ancestors living under the ground--all weird shit, and they were so caught up in this they wanted to take over the world. We all know at least the last bit. So there is another whack job story yet again thatr has MILLIONS involved, and caused so much suffering and death

As a poster commented above, but didn't return to debate, there have been modern ideas that calim consciousness can merge with computers. Terrence McKenna pushed that theory, and the belief that in the future there will be a 'singlularity'

The technological singularity is a hypothetical event in which an upgradable intelligent agent (such as a computer running software-based artificial general intelligence) enters a 'runaway reaction' of self-improvement cycles, with each new and more intelligent generation appearing more and more rapidly, causing an intelligence explosion and resulting in a powerful superintelligence whose cognitive abilities could be qualitatively as far above humans, as human intelligence is above ape intelligence.[1][2][3] More broadly, the term has historically been used for any form of accelerating or exponential technological progress hypothesized to result in a sudden discontinuity, beyond which events may become unpredictable or even unfathomable to human intelligence.[4]

So involved in this is the myth that eventually computers will become actually intelligent, so much so they surpass human intelligence

So, right, it may be easy for some to look 'back' at myths like scientology, and the Nazi myth, and see how absurd they are, but what about this one we are in now? ARE we carrying on in whacky toxic myth territory, and if so what then? Do we learn from the past? And what does that mean?

It means that we are in the sixth great extinction event, Fukushima the greatest disaster in the history of the world, multiple meltdowns destroying the ocean with radioactive toxicity, and you're fucking worried about Nazis and Scientology?  Perhaps if you cared you'd focus on that, instead of trying to engage us in other subjects.  Well, you will start caring soon along with the rest of the people too asleep to realize what's going on.  Toxic?  The big salmon of the entire recent contest here was 10 pounds.  Normally 20 pounds would be the threshold of any boat even entering a fish.  But, this year, for 400 boats there was a total of 5 fucking fish.  TOTAL.  The ten pounder was the biggest of the five.  The ocean is dying, and nobody gives a shit other than a few.

It makes me ill.

As a practical matter materialism is about the taste of steak, the smell of money, the worth of a living enclosure enclosure, the value of individual genetic material which is just some common chemicals, none of which are strictly material things.

I don't know in what way he was promoting them, but it's pointless to hold out hope for immortality. I suspect that given enough time the universe itself will dissolve into nothingness. It's not crazy to suggest that one day we might be able to produce or even transfer consciousness, but emotional investment in such ideas could be considered crazy.

Yes because reality includes sensuality. But materialism built on science does not respect sensuality. And materialism + scientism has brought about the myth of mental illness which classes various behaviours, emotional states, spiritual states as being biologically-caused mental illness even though there is no actual medical science to support that myth. A child now being 'caught' daydreaming in school can very well be termed 'ADHD' and be pushed drugs like Ritalin. So there again is a toxic myth

Ironically scientology supports the protest against this mental illlness myth and you will find them making videos raving against psychiatry and its history, and its pills, and sadly even some leaders in the field of exposing the mental illness myth see them as good friends--ie 'the enemy of my enemies are my friends' (Thomas Szasz). But yet as seen scientology is a terrible mindcontrolling abusive cult. So why would you want support from such an insane belief system?

Please examine that concept:
Quote:
given enough time the universe itself will dissolve into nothingness

what would that even mean? Is not that idea a myth? have you ever seen 'nothing'? haven't you always seen so-called 'nothing' in relation to so-called 'something'?

And what does 'transfer consciousness' mean? To me it does not make sense. As much sense as scientology.

I am not cross examining you. I just think that critical thinking needs to be encouraged. if people did that in regards scientology would they ever get caught up in it?

By nothingness I mean everything being reduced to a non-physical state, and by that I mean the loss of energetic entanglement resulting in space and time. If space and time are properties of energetic entanglement the universe will eventually be dissolved/radiate into nothing which would technically be correct because there would be no things or space for things.

Consciousness seems an impersonal process, so consciousness itself can't be transferred, but perhaps an identity can be. What it would mean in practice I'm not sure, but one might assume there's nothing inherently impossible about the idea... but it wouldn't represent immortality.

But I respond to the idea in your first paragraph as being a myth. it is of same ilk as eg 'the last days'. Ie the idea that there is an 'end'. But in reality 'nothing' is just one side of a dynamic which always has something. In reality we have no experience of nothing without something or something without nothing. What reality is is somethingnothing or nothingsomething
When you observe anything, a tree etc you NEED 'nothing' to see the form. So I don't agree with the science of that prophecy

as for your second paragraph, it begs the question 'what is identity'? is it really substantial or process? I think the latter. It is not a thing, but an everflowing infusion of experiences

That is a principal I generally agree with, but it's dependent on the universe existing for such polarities to exist. In absence of a material universe it's unclear what would happen to the energy that formed it, but it wouldn't exist in a way that would allow for the classification of things, although in the absence of intern time one could suggest that the moment the universe evaporates it is also born again.

There is of course a lot of theory in such concepts, but another way to look at it even in the context of a material universe is that the universe is not a thing so much as a context in which things form. It takes space and time for trees to exist and to observe them. Without space time the universe could be considered formless (thingless).

Quote:

Understood, but that would be the goal to transfer a persons personality, memories, etc. If you can't tell the difference, is there one? If we are not our personalities then there's no need to "transfer consciousness" since we are all the same. I am you and you are me and we are all together.

OK, I am assuming this is a myth. So we ask questions, like you would the BS the scientologists preach (by the way I am not being personal. I understand you believe this?)

Who is claiming this? I had a quick search and came up with this guy: The Universe Will Vanish In 100 Billion Years – Says Nobel Prize Winner Brian P. Schmidt
Quote:
Imagine a dark Universe with no stars, no planets, and no galaxies. In 100 billion years astronomers could be out of work because there are no celestial objects to observe.

They Universe will fade away and if humans still exist, they will feel lonelier than ever.

This gloomy picture of the future was presented Professor Brian P Schmidt, renowned astronomer and 2011 Nobel Prize winner in Physics.

“Human beings will look to an empty universe in 100 billion years, as all the galaxies will fade away except the Milky Way we live in,” said Schmidt, who is attending the 28th General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in Beijing.

Professor Schmidt shared the 2011 Nobel Prize in physics with Saul Perlmutter and Adam Riess for providing evidence that the expansion of the universe is accelerating.

Is this what you think is going to happen?

had a quick wikipedia on him, and he is claimed to be a 'militant agnostic':
Personal life

Quote:
Schmidt is married to Jennifer Gordon, PhD. They met while they were both studying for their PhDs at Harvard - he in Astrophysics and she in Economics. They decided to settle in Australia, which he had already visited on several occasions to visit family. He now holds dual citizenship of Australia and the United States.[10]

He is not religious, being described as a "militant agnostic" with his tagline, "I don't know, and neither do you!"[43]

YET he seems to know what is going to happen in a 100 billion years...? :strokebeard: Does this ring true to you? It sure don't to me.

Is this not just another toxic myth with added pseudoscience?

See the thing is this. LOOKIN at the bigger story of myths in history, we find that one of the ways they could hold their power over many others was that a relatively small elite had the only technological means to be in-the-know. IE they would use lingo the majority didn't know like Latin, and literary tricks, and symbolism that was out of the understanding of the gullible who believed literally the sur-face stories.

Now there is the elite groups of scientists who have their own technology and language, and not many people have access to their tools nor understand their language, which includes maths, so with that power and authority it would be/is very easy to push myths onto 'the masses'. People will think 'what do I know? I am not a trained scientist. Reality must be how these people say it is!'
Quote:

I agree with the last sentence. I think we are. it is very hard to conceive of this though. IE why you are 'you' and I am 'me' and what happens to me when I die, because we are made to believe we are a separate soul (religion) and an 'individual' (secular). But I see us more akin to the particle wave ambiguity of QM. That in one way, perspective, I am 'me' here at a location with my identity (which itself is forever in motion), but in certain extraordinary circumstances am kinda spread out where I can merge into a 'you and/or a 'them, and even trees and clouds and other animals etc etc. Again the dynamic of reality where something can be both/and

# edit--LOL will ya just look what control freaks those fkin Scientologists are!! I just happened to scroll up to the top of this thread where I had linked to a video about how the father of the leader of the Scientology cult was being exposed, and it has been removed. How predictable.

I don't consider it a toxic myth because it's not exactly a part of a movement or ideology. As well, it's somewhat intuitive. It's possible that everything with mass radiates via gravity and that everything is volatile to some degree in other ways. Our eyes perceive photons, demonstrating the volatility of stars. Logically the universe is dissolving.

It's also not a toxic myth because the scientific community (to whom the idea is particularly relevant) doesn't accept it as a fact but as an idea that warrants serious consideration. It's something they seek proof for via math and experiments like those taking place at particle colliders. There has been some positive evidence to support the existence of the Higgs boson field, one of many ways physicists are look at how energy may function to produce space/time. Some string theory indicates space and time are just relationships between particles. If this 'entanglement' untangles, no more space or time.

It is a compelling idea to me.

take a look at this short video:
Quote:
"we don't even know how our own brains work...we don't even know how our brain conjures up an image  of what is objectively outside our heads...we don't know how our brain creates a 3D colour image inside the brain that looks like it's outside. We don't know how we see objective reality. That's the mystery of consciousness. We don't know how the film that we see springs out of the three pounds of jelly inside our skull...we don't even know where the screen is..."

IF it is true that we/science don't even know how our brains work, how can we then objectify the universe as such ideas as you choose do? Again I feel a dynamic, of subjective and objective, and how you cannot have one without the other. This is why I have a problem with your 'nothingness', and prophecies for billions of years into the future when these guys are so specialozed they don't even know what another discipline is about/doing/how it relates OR what is gonna happen tomoz lol

Quote:

"Today's scientists have substituted mathematics for experiments, and they wander off through equation after equation, and eventually build a structure which has no relation to reality." Nicola Tesla

As for the experiments. Can you not see that THAT may be a myth physically manifested as that very means of 'testing/discovering reality'. The whole accepted notion of spending a fortune (how much??) on that massive technology to smash 'particles'...? Is this not myth in action? I am just curious.
