Job restrictions/disadvantages because of tattoos?

Im currently majoring in engineering science and ive been really wanting to get a sleeve or two but ive been holding off because my father has always told me its a bad idea. He claims it makes things much harder when trying to get employed into a serious job. Hes in his 50s, maybe back then it wasnt as accepted but now its much more accepted I believe. So, assuming thats the case im wondering if its seriously going to decrease my chances of getting a job when im out of college....

Anyone here have any experience in this? Think you might have missed an opportunity or two because of this? Or, maybe you've had the opposite and you've had no problem finding serious jobs with a full sleeve or two. No offence but im not talking about any mcdonalds minimum wage jobs. Thanks, any input is appreciated here. Kinda shitty we even have to have this conversation but this is how things are tbh.

I don't feel my 20 some tattoos have ever stopped me from working. At least half those are visible.

I'm in my mid twenties and I have not been unemployed since I was 16 when I got my first tattoo. Not counting the past year, I'm unemployed now from an injury.

It definitely mattered 20 years ago, but these days it's pretty rare IMO that anyone cares.

Just the other day at a restaurant my waitress had 2 extremely visible sleeves, and she was in direct contact/sight of customers.

I've had employers compliment my tattoos.

I'm in the horticulture industry which is pretty progressive though. My most recent job was working for a college in a laboratory setting doing plant based research. I got the job just fine and didn't have to cover my ink while working.

Aside from my tattoos I also have 2 eyebrow piercings, 2 lip piercings, and dreadlocks. Allll of that combined and I still never have ever had trouble finding better than average employment.

Times have most certainly changed. People care a hell of a lot more about your skill set and work ethic than what's on your skin.

I concur, but also if you have a pleasant personality then if doesn't matter what you have permanently etched on your skin.  For me my epic fails with finding jobs is the fact that I get nervous around new people and tend to look like I am really fucking fucked up on drugs from nervousness, does not go over well.:twitchy:

I'm an engineer. Where I work it wouldn't disqualify you but very few engineers have visible tattoos. If you really feel you need them make sure they can be covered by a shirt.

I have a public job working for a municipality and I have visible tattoos. There has only been one individual who has ever mentioned it and I asked he felt that ink on my skin had anything to do with my work ethic our intellect. I walked away while he stood there not sayin anything.

I intern as an engineer and I have a half sleeve and a forearm tattoo, but at the interview I wore long sleeves and it was winter time. I got the job cuz my resume was dope and I suppose my interviewing skills were good and had skills that were good for the company.

But as far as tattoos, I haven't seen anyone with a significant amount of tattoos except for maybe one person with a tattoo on his hand smaller than a quarter. I show my forearm tatt and noone freaks out over it.

Sounds like a risky gamble to me.

I mean, if u have no experience, they might like the "non tattooed" person cause of maybe some preconcieved notions about people with tatts?

You never know what the employer is thinking.

I would stick to body tattoos, avoiding the arms and especially the forearms to play it safe. You can always get tattoos later AFTER you have been working somewhere for awhile :shrug:

anyway, if I interviewed you and another candidate and you were both close in qualifications I would go with the other one based on the tattoos.  It may not be right, but its how life works.  Keep it classy, and something that can easily be hidden for when needed.

Unless its a tramp stamp, in which case you should make sure they see in the interview so you get the job.

Yeah you can always cover your tattoos up with long sleeves for the interview and on the job if they ask you to or just never let them know.  I've seen engineers with tattoos though they weren't suits and ones with rotted teeth too which is obviously worse.

Its much more accepted if you want to be the general manager at taco bell maybe. Coming from somebody who works in chemistry, visible tattoos are still regarded as somewhat "tacky" and whatever else comes with that. Its just not viewed as "professional". Sorry man. Wish it was different, but its not.

When did things like fashion and style and personal choice of appearance become more important at jobs than work ethic, intellect, knowledge, charisma, personality.......?

Your dad is mostly right. Some day, some way, you may run into someone that judges you for your tattoos.

I'll stay above the elbow for that reason.

if you want to be safe, just avoid tattoos on your hands, neck, and face--most professions where tattoos may be perceived as a disadvantage are environments where long sleeved shirts are completely appropriate and you can simply cover up--lots of canvas on the body in places that don't require constant visibility

if you wanna wear short-sleeves, keep the ink above the elbow--if your work is done shirtless, than tattoos probably aren't an issue



people will judge you--not everyone, but enough--even tho it's true perspectives are changing and what was once unacceptable is now becoming standard, for many people tattoos still carry the unsavouriness of criminality

i intentionally have some very visible tattoos (hands and face), partly due to the fact that i know some people will judge my character based off of these shallow aspects of the self and decide i'm not worth getting to know--the way i figure, saves me the time finding out they are judgmental assholes somewhere down the line

It sucks but in the professional world and just in life in general people judge based on looks. We all do it, first impressions are pretty much how people base their opinion of you. It's going to be easier to find a job without tattoos so why get them and make your life harder even just by a little bit, You can still get tattoos just make sure no one will see them at work. it's like having long hair as a male.
