I didn't even know this was a thing.

I'm not really OK with this idea, unnecessary body modification makes me shiver. What does the doodad do? Do you get like heat vision and night vision settings? That would actually be pretty keen.

There are some new miniaturized FLIR modules that make heat/night vision a reality. Hell, I could probably hack one together, it would be a lot bulkier than the one pictured in the article.

As far as cybernetic hate crime... ehh... I don't know, I wouldn't call it a hate crime, but it is an area that needs to be explored legally.

I'd read a bit about this story, it was quite a while ago. I guess they were pissed off at apparently being filmed. He's a prof at my school but in the engineering department. Not sure if he teaches any classes I'm allowed to take.

I think that 'augmented humans' are an inevitable development. It's simply the way that technology is going. We'll either reach singularity or bomb ourselves back to the stone age.

The implication of the  'internet of things' is incredibly far reaching and terrifying because I think we've hit a point of no return - and while it's amazing, the future of technology definitely has a very very scary side, particularly concerning privacy.

I'm far more concerned about that than people like this dude. When augmented humans are more common, what about the people that will without a doubt be able to access the devices embedded in other people's bodies?

That's true, I hadn't thought about hacking in an augmented world. That sounds like there should be a PKD book about it. Here I was sitting here just freaking out about the guy who records everything he sees and how little I would prefer to be around such a person

Yeah, the implications are really quite terrifying.
We've already hit that point where our privacy has been grossly invaded and I don't think you or I will see that fixed within our lifetimes - and we're already recorded far more often than we realize - generally via CCTV, but the fact that the NSA and god knows who else can in fact access webcams and microphones in smartphones without our knowledge. Even bypassing that little light that is supposed to be embedded in the hardware itself(iirc).

I think that augmented humanity will have it's upsides, particularly in the medical field - a lot of lives will be completely improved, blind people will be able to see, paralyzed people will be able to walk - and that's of course just scratching the surface.

Unforunately progress has it's downsides - and it's happening so fast that I think it's almost unsustainable growth and we'll hit an impass or an inevitable point where we as humans will end up regressing dramatically in some way. We've observed the cycle many times in history before.

To be fair, he's not even trying to hide or do anything surreptitiously like how you attempt to trick people into thinking you're a female,etc. Your reaction to this story is honestly puzzling. You also talked lots of shit on that Rachel Dolezal lady for pretending to be black when that in particular was no different than pretending to be the opposite sex, and if anything is less extreme than pretending to be the opposite sex since there's less genetic difference between two members of the same sex and different "race" than there is for the opposite sex (physiologically, chromosomally, neurologically,etc,etc). Why are you such a massive hypocrite when it comes to body modification anyway? Only you get the body modification rights? Seems pretty hypocritical and self-entitled to me.

Anyway, he also handled it pretty calmly and peacefully and seemed pretty understanding of people's intolerance, hostility, and ignorance. You are always yelling about people discriminating on transsexuals by not supporting and patting them on the back for their mental illness and decision to try to shun nature, but are jumping at the chance to talk down on a professor and scientific researcher wearing an experimental medical device that could help millions of blind people see, LOL. :lol:


If he was actually even taking footage of everything he sees maybe you'd have some kind of point, but his device normally doesn't even save images:

It's pretty amusing that they were mad at that guy filming, when they're security cameras absolutely everywhere, and people don't care :shrug:. One attached to your face is only more conspicuous. There was this surveillance camera in headquarters back while I was in ROTC (stupid mistake, left after six months) that had 300x optical zoom, you could see people half a mile away as if they were standing right next to you. No one seemed to care :shrug:

As long as people don't use this stupid face mounted shit nefariously I don't really care.

Yeah including at the McDonalds where these people worked. I was reading an article of his where he contrasted surveillance with "sousveillance", a term that I think he may have coined. I think it basically refers to recording by individuals. "Mcveillance" was another one and I'm not sure how it all fits in, but I think the "Mc" is in reference to this McDonald's incident.

There is no genetic difference between a male and a female except for the extra male genes on the Y chromosome, but the Y chromosome can be inactivated by hormones. A genetically XY male has still inherited a full set of female genes from his mother, genes which can be activated hormonally.

Further, you don't know what chromosomes I have. Hell, I don't. Many trans people have hidden intersex conditions. I know a trans woman who has XX chromosomes. Don't assume things.

You're the one popping into this thread with a wall of text completely focused on me, my life, and specific comments I made a year ago... It's actually pretty weird.
