I fucking hate people sometimes

I was riding the commuter rail to work this morning, and as I was getting off at my stop in downtown Boston some guy bumped in to me in the aisle. It struck me as strange since the train hadn't lurched or anything, and there was nooone behind him shoving, and I hadn't stopped suddenly or anything. I make a habit of wrapping the strap of my purse around my wrist so that if anyone tried to grab it, they'd have a hard time...I feel this guy's hand brush against mine, and I look down to him trying to reach in to my bag. SO I start yelling "This guy's trying to rob me" or some shit, to get people's attention, the guy immediately starts to hustle off the train, so I push him into a seat and some big guy grabs him and stands over him. I ran off the train because I didn't want to miss my stop, and I was getting off, one of the commuter rail employees was over by him checking his pockets, presumably to see if he had stolen anyone's shit.
The human race really dosappoints me sometimes. Luckily he didn't get anything out of my purse. My wallet has pictures of my father in it who died when I was 6...I don't care much about the money, but those cannot be replaced. I once lost my wallet (it fell out of my pocket on the train like 8 years ago) and some kind person found it, called me like 1/2 hour later as I was starting to panick (I had an "if found" card in my wallet) and she BROUGHT the wallet to me at work, all the money still in it. It was so sweet of her.
Anyways, yeah, so now I'm at work and a bit shaken up. Fuck thieves

Oh well at least that guy helped you out and you didnt get hurt or have anything stolen... when 15 black guys kick you in and steal everything from your pockets in broad daylight while a car park full of witnesses stand there doing absolutely nothing then you'll REALLY start to lose faith in people.

I'll have to remember when I visit North America that there are assholes like that around out there...
But Liz, you should totally not be carrying around irreplaceable items in your wallet, such as those photos. Any decent photo processing shop will be able to make nice reproductions of them, perhaps even restore them slightly if they are faded or whatever. Then you can keep the originals in a safe place. It doesn't cost that much either.

Fuck thieves.
My shitty train story for the morning: We're packedlike fucking sardines onto the F train and a big black lady in this huge white dress and all these bags squeezes in and is right up against me and the tiny little indie rock girl right next to me. Black lady drops her umbrella, and liek I said, we are all packed like sardines...but I lower myself to the ground, where the umbrealla has fallen flat, and pick it up off the dirty wet floor and bring it back up to her.
Not a single thank you. Not even eye contact. I waited until she was looking in the general direction of myf ace and gave her an overenthusiastic "You're welcome!" and still nothing. Fuck people.

You're right about the pictures, thank you for the suggestion. I have been making an effort to scan all of my old pictures so that they're on the computer and can't be lost forever. I have to remember to take these ones out of my wallet and do the same.
Robot, I hate it when people are unappreciative. This morning on the train before that incident a lady was coughing really bad and I handed her a cough drop. She must have thanked me like 10 times, you would have thought I handed her a $100 bill. It was nice that she was so appreciative, but kind of sad at the same time that it's such a rarity for people to do nice things for eachother that she was THAT shocked, ya know?

Yeah, it IS sad. I dunno, I always think of these two quotes:
"Good manners are the glue of society." - Kramer from Senfeld "I hate people when they're not polite." - David Byrne in the Talking Heads song Psycho Killer

You can have my car if you really want it. I don't use it much anyways
And Robot, thanks for the quotes, I like them
I guess I'm going to start carrying a different purse that zips all the way up, and continue to wrap the strap around my wrist, so if someone tries to snatch the whole thing, they're either going to have to take my arm with it, or deal with me. Neither one is going to end well for them.

Hey hun... that does suck that some guy tried to rob you, but you can definitely seek out a positive way of viewing humanity from such an experience.
I mean, as someone above said, the bystanders could have stood there and done nothing. Humanity had your back, really... and it'd be healthier to focus on that aspect than on the thief.
Same goes for the cough drop lady... there's two sides to it, and you're better off finding the upside. Don't view it as sad... this is how I see that kind of thing:
Living in New England, I've learned to really appreciate others' empathy and hospitality simply because it's not commonplace and expected. If you go down south, EVERYONE puts on a polite face because it's the norm and therefore socially expected. Up here, when someone is gracious or hospitable, it is because they are doing what their heart tells them and not what society deems correct.
I've learned to appreciate the "cold New England shoulder" for it's ability to highlight and draw attention to the diamonds in the rough.

You're right. I often hard a hard time not being cynical about this type of stuff, but yeah, you're right. I shouldn't look at it negatively, and it IS awesome that people helped as fast as they did. It's just discouraging that some guy would attempt to do that. I mean, I don't look like I have a lot of money or look like I have expensive things
Whatever, I'll get over it. I've calmed down a lot. Suffer wants to bring me to a police supply store tonight and buy me pepper spray just in case I ever (god forbid) need to use it. I'm not sure if it's a good idea, but he might insist on it.

I think it is a good idea. If Sam was working in the city, I would probably make her do the same. Either that, or one of those tazer-on-a-leash type dealies, but those require a gun license to carry.

Pepper spray is just going to piss someone off. You're better off with the foam or a gun.

Don't be squeamish about carrying a weapon. That is just the way it is...let's not get into Hobbes and Locke and all but man is still in the state of nature, looking over his shoulder.
I try to carry a knife on me at all times.

"This Fox Labs pepper spray foam comes out like shaving cream and adheres to the face of your target. It sticks there and burns like crazy. It will block their view if wearing glasses or goggles, making them remove them thereby exposing their eyes. Your aim with Fox Labs Foam pepper Spray has to be a little better than using the fog, but it really stays put and is less likely to blow back on you in windy conditions. It is also less likely to cause cross-contamination indoors due to its focused output."
