Death is the one democratic thing there really is...Everybody gets it. And the interesting thing is nobody really knows when.

The end of one thing, is the beginning of another thing.

And so on.

You would do better to realize your immortality.

There is no end. No beginning either for that matter. Linear time is an illusion. Everything that has ever happened or ever will happen or ever could happen IS happening. Right Now.
And it always has.

So try not to worry about it too much

One time, while on an 8th of shrooms, I had this visualization/revelation of how space time might work.. basically I envisioned a sheet of chainmail, in which each "link" was someone's "life".. and when you got to the end, where does that put you? Back at the beginning.

But um.. that's completely unfounded. It was still awesome to think about while on an 8th of shrooms.

Yup. We yogis have similar point of view on that matter. Upper principles (atmos-buddhi) are immortal. Lower principles of man (like physical and astral body, passions & desires... etc) are just tools to perfect the soul through cycles.
And yes, i agree - there is no end nor beginning...

just a side thought-

anyone who wants to come to grips with the significance of their own insignificance should read "The Long Walk" by Richard Bachman AKA Stephen King. I read that when i was 14 and found it highly enlightening.

I have sometimes managed to grasp the reality that I will be nonexistant someday, and I've gotten so into the realization of mortality that I've become very, very scared. It's actually driven me to reach deeper inside my self, and understand this process we call "Life" a little bit more.

I don't believe we exist after death. I think our souls do, or something for that matter - but not US. The me speaking to you guys right now, is mainly from my mind. My Ego, nothing more.

So yes, I understand that someday my personality will not exist. Yes, it is a painful thought.

Death is a horrible thing and i refuse to accept that i to will one day die. I have seen to many close friends die from various accidents and suicides etc to know that after they pass away no one will ever give them a second thought. People say they will never forget you, but they will. Maybe not totally but you know what they say. Out of sight is out of mind.

I believe that our personalities are our spirits. When we physically die, out spirits survive, or continue on, with the same personalities that we developed here on earth.

Why do you believe our personalities cease to exist?

No. There is a psychological theory that says if human beings were constantly aware of their own mortality-its inevitability and unpredictability- in a deep, emotional (rather than intellectual) way, they would be paralyzed with terror. A lot of philosophers have talked about this too. I think it's true, you would be scared shitless.

I don't subscribe to this theory. Even in my youthful abandon I'm fully aware of my mortality. I just have the mental coherence not to be the product of my emotionality alone. All it leads me to conclude is, "I have to make every choice in life consciously, and when I decide I have to be sure [I won't regret it later]". Live life consciously, absorbing everything you can, because there may not be a next time. Live every moment to its fullest, even when you're doing nothing in particular.
