so can you just pluck off the new pups, or cutt them off and use them for a new graft?  (or does that hurt it)

Well in theory you could pluck off new pups, but if you're going for a graft you want a flat surface to get them to stick together properly so cut it off.

That second graft I cut off one of the pups from the first graft. You can't see where it was taken from now with the new growth and that was only done about 3 months ago. It doesn't really do it any harm and from what I can gather from from reading from else where removing the pups is more likely to encourage the main head to produce flowers. But if you wanted to enter it in a beauty contest scars are never a good thing :crazy2:

I find so much good data on this damn sight, even when I'm not looking for myco-related topics. Just got my first L. caespitosa (avatar pic) and was looking for information on taking pup cuttings. Grown a great many things but never really cacti. Closest I've grown in aloe and jade plants, but have never taken cuttings or grafted before. You have answered my question on the viability of cloning L. caespitosa pups. :rockon:

They're still growing, although very slowly with it being the winter season. The first graft I've had to up root and repot as it kept falling over and broke all the roots off to the point where I noticed a root trying to grow right under the graft, there's some growing just above soil level as well so helpfully it'll keep growing nicely next year... if not I can just take more pups off it :smile:

Difficulty has more to do with reading abillity and ability to precisely follow directions. You need no knowledge of chemistry whatsoever, you just need to understand some basic principles as simple in concept as: water boils at 100C and freezes at 0C. Otherwise all published syntheses of organic and inorganic compounds can be reproduced successfully by pretty nearly anyone with at least average intelligence. Problems always have to do with availability of materials, not esoteric knowledge.

Well despite my lack of time to take care of my cacti properly this year (only watering most of them twice).
The second lophophora graft I made has reached flowering point...


Unfortunately with the first graft, the pereskiopsis it was grafted to started to rot. Other than being rather dehydrated the actual lophophora seems to be fine after cutting the rotting part away.

I can't remember exactly when I grafted it, but I posted up a photo 13 months ago, probably only grafting it a week or 2 before.. though for all I know it's been flowering all summer while I haven't bothered checking it.

I'd found one of my other peyote had fruited a second time this year without any assistance at the same time... That one had first fruited back in Feb, seemed a bit of an odd time of year for the UK but it is indoors.

Well I can't say neglect was entirely in my favour this year... this is the pereskiopsis stock the first graft was on.

And now we have fruit, wouldn't imagine the seeds will be viable as it self fertilized. Maybe next year I'll have the time to cross pollinate with one of my other flowering peyote.

If it set fruit and the fruit has seeds, they will be fertile. Some types of L. williamsii are self-fertile.

Yes, all of mine seem to be self-fertile.  Flowers that appear in January, when the Lophs are in cold frames and there aren´t any pollinating insects about, are invariably followed by fruit with viable seed.  Of course, we don´t all find the same things.
