It can really be as small as you want it to be. I've done grafts on pereskiopsis that were 2" above the soil. Larger pereskiopsis allow for more photosynthesis, and will usually speed things up a bit. Also, the larger the pereskiopsis is, the longer you will be able to leave the graft before needing to regraft.

I've tended to go for ones about 6" above the soil. I saw another thread where someone mentioned that this is about the sweet spot for maximum growth against being as natural looking as possible.

97 days and still going strong.


Here's the second graft, definitely taking water up well, I wasn't too sure how it'd do originally with the way it's lifted slightly to one side and some connective tissue has grown between the stock and scion

I'm going to try this method on my next graft, cover the pup with plastic foil.

Photos aren't so good this week, so I've left a few out (always easier to take photos when I'm not on a 14.5 hour shift the same day), they were taken yesterday so it's still another week on.


The second graft looks like it's going to start pupping all over now:

I love the way the grafted root looks, I didn't realise that was possible. Any particular technique with that?

I'm still half asleep from starting night shifts.. I guess the roots were put upside down on top of the stock?

I used a 4  year old williamsi button, put the top half on a blue myrtl and the root of the williamsi on to a pere, i cut a sharp a point on top of the pere and in paled it onto to pere.

The williamsi root was way to big for the pere but after 6 years its doing very well.

I will put an update up again for sure :grin:
