The site has changed. The Internet has, too, which in a way is both fortunate and unfortunate. The site is open to everyone in the world who has cell phone reception. You don't have to boot up a slow computer, wait for the modem to lock, etc.
There's the aura of instant gratification and coddling. Indeed, we should make an effort as older posters to help lead the younger generations into mycology and psychedelia. They will be the mods looking out for a whole new generation of kids when we are gone. Sadly, I don't see in them what I saw in people like sloth, Shroomism, you, geo, anno, seuss, etc.. people just take this place for granted every day like they're somehow more important than everyone else or entitled to the fun life of being a drama hate magnet troll.
Sometimes when I'm on here I'll get a passing thought of "wow, remember when posters would actually grow mushrooms?". But then I see people like azur leading the charge, or cronicr, and they give me faith this place will thrive and flourish.
I don't remember as many trolls or hate magnets. I don't remember people harshing each others' vibes or singling out other members. I do remember a lot more support for people having bad trips. I definitely don't remember an administrator being so openly attacked like Asante was, and for *months*, Ythan. Months. I'm still surprised he didn't say "OK well lol bye" or just ban everyone. It's sowing the seeds of discontent when a group of people gang up on an admin and get away with it. Better yet dude, they still "rib" him about it but you can tell it hurts him. That just makes my heart hurt. Those kind of posters need to be Bassfreaked.
Yet, these advances in technology and communication have helped bring light to not only mycology, but offers access to better tools and procedures we didn't have back then. It's awfully nice to see near-beginners jumping headfirst into agar, grains and bulk and not being stuck doing pftek for months on end, or longer.
The amount of scientific data and taxonomy and the rich culture of biologists and photographers alike speaks loudly for the site. It will always be a plethora of incredible information, available completely free of charge to anyone in the world. You can't beat that.
In the end I guess, everyone's getting older. Kids. Family. Health issues. Older heads passing. People moving along with their lives. It would be nice if we could just smoke weed, trip out and play on drug boards forever but that's not always how life goes.
The site has changed, Ythan. It's not truly about what it is now, it's what you'd like the site to be like 18 more years from now, but I think it's heading in the wrong direction; or I suppose I should say, it's become a place that I never thought it would be, both for good and bad.
If this place is going to survive it has to evolve in some fashion. Or fix itself. I guess it's whether you want it to be a mushroom site with social media mixed in, or social media with mycology mixed in.
For what any of that's worth, anyway, from a random guy on the Internet I guess.
