How about a counter "experiment":

If you steal your friends car keys when he is not looking, he will still think they are where he left them. If the universe was self aware, he would know you had stolen his keys.

Therefore the universe is not self-aware.

Being AFFECTED by something (moved stick) doesn't imply knowledge of what the cause of that effect is, or even self-awareness.

It's like that saying, "if you were god you could move mountains" or something, where as if you were god you know the mountain is already where is should be. So what makes you think that anything would change just because of awareness? There are so many ways one could argue either way on this point, but I dont think anyone can prove either way, that means to me that in a universe that expresses infinite possibilities this is just another possibility. Didnt someone say "anything that can happen, will happen?"
