Protools is a great one for that. I'm pretty sure there's a free version available on the net. It's not as spectacular as say, Protools HD but it's also not $18,000. On that you've got 8 tracks to work with, a good selection of editing tools and a few decent EFX plugins. You can record from whatever mic you've got or import files from cd's or other media.

Or you can probably find a better version of the program on Kazaa or soulseek, but the free one is a decent start to figuring it out and experimenting. Here's a link to the PC version download http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/ProTools/

Protools?! Yeah it sure does the job but what about something less advanced and still professional : Sound Forge by Sonic Foundry.
It's not hard to find and i'm sure you'll be more than happy to work with this.

Yeah, Protools is pretty much the industry standard. I downloaded the free version, but it doesn't run smoothly on my PC. Maybe that's cause it's only 400 mhz, but Protools is really made to be run on a mac. And I got good news - I'm getting a mac and Protools as well in about a month.

Yeah I need to get more RAM on my piece of junk PC to run protools correctly, I've been meaning to do it for a long time but just havn't gotten around to it. I finally have the program installed but opening it would probably crash my shitty system.
I personally prefer to use protools because I was trained on it. It's simple once you've been taught what it's all about but I suppose it wouldn't be the simplest thing to figure out on your own, simply through fooling around. I must admit I'm a pretentious geek when it comes to gear and software selection. I was trained on the industy standard gear and really havn't learned how to run anything simpler or semi-professional.

Actaully, when I downloaded the free protools, I realised I needed more ram (128 instead of 64 i think). So I paid the 30 bucks or whatever but the program still didn't run smoothly, and I have all the other system requirments. So it might still not work if you get the RAM.

For recording from a mic I usually use cool edit pro. (no cool edit 2000) Cool edit pro has really good multitrack features as well which comes in handy, lots of effects and filters.
