Just got a laptop/steady connection, and I'm very interested in making music. I like AFX (most rephlex really), Boards of canada, squarepusher, that type of stuff mainly(wont go into detail). What would you recomend? I know I could get fruity loops but everyone has fruity loops., and there's so so many programs to choose from. Better yet if someone could put this software within arms length I'd b very appreciative(always looking for handouts).

yeah I've heard a lot about reason. I remember I used to have napster and morpheus and could download a bunch of stuff but that was then. What's the best program to download music/videos/programs these days without getting ticketed by the man?

I've heard great things about cubase, about how better the final quality is on it compared to reason, but I love reason, thats prolly cos i started on reason. I'm too high to remember what i was getting out so take what you want from that.

I once installed reason, spent about 5 minutes looking at it, then gave up. I heard that reason is better if you want to use samples etc and Cubase SX is better if you want to record your own music/ use VSTs but not having used Reason I can't really say. I used sonic foundry's Acid Pro 4 for a long time- very easy to use if you want to do loops. If you listen to the tunes on my website, everything before this year was done in Acid Pro 4.

Reason and Cubase are both best utilized when used together. Reason 2.5 comes with a Very Analog sounding distortion, Reason's NN-XT makes a lightning-fast sampler when slaved to Cubase's sequencer. Dr. Rex is a very cool Acid / Live type loop player that will change tempo without changing pitch. you would also use Cubase to record, compress, equalize and effect individual Reason Audio Tracks. an included plug-in called ReWire allows you to route up to 64 Audio Tracks from Reason into Cubase, DP4, or ProTools.

romm, I recommend going to your quality LOCAL (fuck guitar center) music shop and buying a Cubase book. It's a fat book and a dry read but will help you immensely rather than blindly clickin n shit

It depends if you are composing stuff professionally or just want to play with loops and stuff.
For composing, Cubase SX is good but its best to have an external synthesizer/midi controller to work with when using it but its not necessary if you are creative and technilogically inclined.
If you are just messing around with samples and stuff then you can use fruity loops or acid like has been said. You should also have a good .wav editor. You can do all this with Cubase but its not as straight forward.
