I highly recommend and use Pro Tools. The free version would probably give you everything you'd need. I recorded quite a few songs with it and people thought it was a "real" band. It has a bit of a steap learning curve, but if you're familar with mixing boards, it shouldn't be too hard.

The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

What kind of recording? If you maen live recording/singing, Pro Tools is good but really requires you to get additional hardware. If you want to stay cheap, IME you should really look into getting a hard dis recorder (or at least a good mixer,) but nothing beats Pro Tools with digital recording; I even heard their new versions supports Direct-X which is a really good thing, IMO, because of all the plugins available, now.

A 24-bit Sound card doesn't hurt, either. (NOT voices; recording bitrate.)
