Names of Suffering Countrys?
    #2176560 - 12/14/03 12:28 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Could someone name some countrys that are living under military rule or another kind of dictoatorship, in which the people are sufferning. I know there are a few in Africa.

Burma would be one of the first that comes to mind.

It would be easier to list the countries they AREN'T in those conditions. Most of Africa,a good part of South America, most of Asia,and most of eastern Europe are like that.

a better list would be countries where people live under those conditions, and whose dictators are supported by the U.S.

There aren't as many as they used to. :lol:

Turkmenistan.

They have a president for life, but that doesn't matter since they offered air bases for attack on Afghanistan.

Having a president for life doesnt necessarily make them worse off. If you are going to define a sufferring country by how different they are than the united states, then that is a pretty low standard. After all, the us imprisons the highest percentage of its population. More than any other country on the planet. That is oppression. There is no other way to define it. Just because we have cheap entertainment and lots of advertisers to tell us how great our lifestyle is, doesn't make it reality.

Most nations with an European/Anglo heritage and ancestry are not dictatorships. Most of those nations also aren't living in extreme poverty either. I exclude all of the former USSR because communism did that.

most of those nations also acquired their current wealth through centuries of rabid colonialism, and created dictatorships in other countries so they could exploit said country's resources and manpower.

Is wealth the issue? Does wealth mean a lack of suffering?

That's a dictatorship. No democracy. Like Saddam & Iraq.
Don't you think that's bad?

A little somethng about America you might not now: Just because we're "supporting" someone, doesn't mean we're not trying to take them down and subvert them in the long run.

Sometimes you just have to take the long view.

And someday we hope to make them as oppressive as us.

A 90% reduction in oppression would be a good start, yes.

The USA has a prison population of 645 per 100,000.

H o w e v e r, 65% of countries have rates of 150 per 100,000 or below. (The United Kingdom?s
rate of 125 per 100,000 of the national population places it at about the mid-point in the Wo r l d
List. Among European Union countries its rate is the second highest, after Portugal?s 145.)
Prison population rates vary considerably between different regions of the world, and
between different parts of the same continent. For example:
? in Africa the median rate for western and central African countries is 60 whereas for
southern African countries it is 250;
? in the Americas the median rate for south American countries is 110 whereas for
Caribbean countries it is 330;
? in Asia the median rate for south central Asian countries (mainly the Indian subcontinent)
is 45 whereas for (ex-Soviet) central Asian countries it is about 400;
? in Europe the median rate for southern European countries is 50 whereas for central
and eastern European countries it is 200;
? in Oceania (including Australia and New Zealand) the median rate is 130.
