Amber alert, proof of a dictatorship?
    #1534186 -

The people decided not to adopt the RAVE act.

Then the government just slipped it in with some other bill.

Isn't this a big red flag telling you that the government will do whatever they want no matter what?

That's a dictatorship.

We live in a dictatorship.

if passing laws that way is the earmark of a dictatorship, america's been a dictatorship for over 200 years.

I'd like to see a stat that shows that the majority of America is against the rave act. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean that the majority doesn't like it.

If we are going to be asking for sources, why not provide a source that supports your claim that there were more white slaves than black slaves? Sorry to derail this thread somewhat, but its not like it was going anywhere fast.....

Yeah, please don?t derail this thread.

I want everyone to look at the Amber Alert Bill, The War On Drugs, The Patriot Act 1 & 2, Homeland Security ect ect. and finally come to the realization that we are in a dictatorship.

I agree, Bush even said it would be easier to run the country if it were a dictatorship, as long as he was the dictator. (I'll look for a source, hold your horses.)

I believe that we are heading in a more fascist direction, but we are still a long way from getting there. The fact that we are able to criticize the administration on this board is proof of that. What we need to do is get everyone out to the polls in 2004 and vote Bush out of office.

Look how much America has changed in the last 2 years, if Bush is in for another 4 years, there's gonna be some bad shit. Bush is probably holding back, in order to win another term. If he gets it he will have nothing to fear, no concerns, no responsibility for his actions.

Finish the War on Drugs that his father failed to win? Sure why not! Worked in Iraq.

Bush probably has figured out by now that most of his domestic enemies are pot-smoking hippes. And he has the legal right and duty to remove them from society.

Learyfan writes:

The people decided not to adopt the RAVE act.

What people? I don't recall seeing a referendum on the issue.

Then the government just slipped it in with some other bill.

These additions are called "riders", and are attached to almost every bill that is passed. Riders have been a fact of life in American legislation for well over a century. Canada does the same thing. So does England and many other parliamentary governments. America is far from alone on this issue. Usually riders are used to distribute pork barrel projects, but sometimes they tack on the weirdest things imaginable. The members of the House and Senate choose not to reject the bill due to a few riders, because they feel strongly that the core of the bill has merit, and since it is the core that gets all the publicity, they don't want to look like idiots in front of their constituents for obstructing a worthwhile bill by "quibbling" over what many voters perceive (wrongly) as irrrelevancies.

It's quite similar to the way the voters vote for a congressional representative who admits to holding several positions contrary to their own, but tells them what they want to hear on OTHER issues.

Isn't this a big red flag telling you that the government will do whatever they want no matter what?

They've been pretty much doing that for a hell of a long time now. Surely this can't be news to you.

That's a dictatorship.

Actually, it's not. It's Democracy.

We live in a dictatorship.

Actually, you don't. You live in a Democracy. It bears little relationship to the system of government so carefully devised by the Founding Fathers, but it is far from a dictatorship.

As you've pointed out many times...it's not a Democracy...It's a Republic.  :smirk:

The US described in the Constitution is a Republic. The US of today is a quasi-democracy (less "quasi" with each day that passes) because the legislators and in many cases the judicial branch ignore the Constitution except when they wipe they feet on it on their way into the office each morning.

I didn't say other countries didn't do it.

You can call it what you want.

When a government passes legislation under relative secrecy, it means the people have no say.

If the people have no say, then we live in a dictatorship.

They just let you vote on things that don't mean much to make you think that you're living in a free country.
