It is a common assumption by new-age hipsters, punksters and the average hipster-doofus that Christmas is a capitalistic-consumer holiday where the masses flock in large sweaty groups to pack themselves into shopping malls and stuff their fat bellies with cheese-steaks and pork sandwiches.

If the Christians of Old Europe didnt come up with Christmas first, I'm sure that Karl Marx would have. Christmas is a ritualistic re-distribution of wealth, where a group of individuals gather by a tree and give each other presents. What is so key about the present exchange is the fact that within the vast majority of families, the wealthier individuals will spend more money on the presents they give than the less-wealthy individuals; thusly re-distributing wealth in a sub-conscious attempt to make society more economically egalitarian.

I love sleep deprivation, until I get to the point where I hate it and everything arround me. Ive just finished my last exam and Ive been staying up all night for the past week, now my schedual is fucked, but I dont have much of an incentive to correct my lifestyle because I dont have anything to do until the 15th.

Thus is life.

It's not really a redistribution of wealth, because the gifts stay within the same family. A burgeous family will remain a burgeous family, the proletariat will remain the proletariat.
It did become a capitalist holiday, because we are urged to consume. If it were a communist holiday, we'd give handmade gifts and not pre-wrapped gifts right off the conveyor belt.
